Committee pledges to eradicate corruption at ports.

The Port Industry Anti-Corruption Standing Committee says that there is the need to instil transparency at the ports.
Enoche Ogenyi, Coordinator of the committee, on Friday in Lagos said the committee was working on ways to eradicate corruption at the ports.
She said the committee had set aside Oct. 18 and Oct. 19 to deliberate on ways to eradicate corruption at the nation's ports.
Ogenyi said the summit, with the theme ``Evolving a new ethical order in the Nigerian maritime industry’’, would be the fourth in the series.
She said the objective of the summit, scheduled for Lagos, would be eradication of corruption and sharp practices in the maritime industry.
The committee spokesman said the summit would also dwell on evolving ethical rules, enlightening and educating stakeholders on the ills of corruption.
She said the summit would afford stakeholders the opportunity to exchange ideas on issues affecting the industry.
Ogenyi said the chairman of the summit would be former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, while the Minister of Transport, Idris Umar, would deliver the keynote address.
The committee, a watchdog in the Nigerian port system, was constituted by the Nigerian Ports Authority in 2001.
Industry players represented on the committee include shipping companies, Nigerian Ports Authority, freight forwarder groups, Transparency in Nigeria and the Nigeria Customs Service.
Others are the Ports Authority Police Command, Nigerian Shippers' Council and the National Association of Chambers of Commerce Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
The committee also has sub-committees in Port Harcourt, Onne, Warri and Calabar ports.
