Police attitude to work far below minimum standard.
Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has said the general attitude to work of police officers falls far below minimum standards.
Speaking in Ilorin during his working visit to Kwara State, he said the Nigeria Police Force, therefore needed a rebirth.
The acting IG visited the state Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu-Gambari.
Abubakar said the Nigeria Police Training School, Ilorin, would be upgraded to Nigeria Police Intelligence School and that the school would serve both Nigerian and other West African police formations.
He added that intelligence tutors from western nations and some other advanced countries will offer trainings to the participants.
Abubakar stated his commitment and that of President Goodluck Jonathan to improving the welfare, logistics and operational efficiency of police officers.
He also said police officers would be provided with better accommodation and uniforms.
According to him, his administration will usher in an era of commitment, determination, uprightness, discipline, dedication to duty and selfless service.
Abubakar said, “There is no way our visions can see the light of the day unless we completely change our general attitude to work which presently falls far below minimum standards.
“With the level of insecurity in our country and the persistent threats to lives and property, the Nigeria Police needs to re-awaken the spirit that has made the Force proud in yesteryear and rise to the challenge of securing our homeland against attacks, crimes and all forms of criminality.
“We shall not tolerate complacency, indolence, corruption, indiscipline, abuse of others’ rights and all the attitudes that have brought us where we are today as an organisation.”
He said he would not only dismiss corrupt officers but prosecute them and urged police officials to see themselves as servants and not masters of the people.
