Police Commission Promotes Two to AIG, punishes Sixteen.

Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of two Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police and reprimanded sixteen officers for different offences.

The commission at its fifteenth plenary meeting, approved the promotion of Mohammed Zarewa and Ibrahim Paiko to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Its Information Officer,Ferdinand Ekpe said the commission also dismissed five Assistant Superintendent of Police for acts that were considered to be inimical to police discipline, while two of them were recommended for prosecution, due to the nature of their offences.

Ekpe said it similarly approved the compulsory retirement of an Assistant Superintendent of Police while sixteen other officers were reprimanded for disciplinary offences.

The Commission is vested with the powers to recommend promotions, disciplinary actions and regulate activities of the Nigerian Police Force.

Civil Defence Corps arrests suspect over fake employment letters.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has paraded a suspect said to be involved in printing fake appointment letters.

Parading the suspect,Commandant-General,Ade Abolurin said the suspect was arrested in Lafia, Nasarawa, following a tip-off.

Abolurin said the corps was determined to clamp down on saboteurs who defraud innocent Nigerians of their hard-earned money.

He said the signature on the letters was not the same with the one on the appointment letters issued by the corps.

The Commandant-General said investigation into the matter was yet to be concluded and called on the public to always provide the corps with useful information.

But in an interview with newsmen, the suspect said his arrest was a surprise to him.

Two docked over house breaking.

A twenty-eight year-old Securityman, Eddy Ikuenobo and a twenty-two-year-old labourer, Benjamin Adams,have been arraigned at an Abuja Senior Magistrate's Court for alleged joint act, house breaking and theft.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Yilkadi Dunji, told the court that one Ugo Nwoko of Federal Housing Authority, Phase one, Lugbe, Abuja, reported that the suspects committed the crime on May sixteen.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge and the Magistrate, Bashar Alkali, granted them bail in the sum of fifty tousand naira each with reasonable sureties in like sum.

The magistrate adjourned hearing in the matter till wednesday next week.

In another development, three other people appeared in court for alleged joint act and negligence.

The suspects include a thirty-two year-old room attendant, Godwin Okon, a thirty-three-year-old supervisor, Umoh Bassey and thirty-six-year-old securityman, Mameh Acchilas.

Prosecutor, Abdul Alhassan, told the court presided over by Senior Magistrate Oyeyipo Ademuyiwa, that Joseph Ameh of Chida Hotels, reported the accused persons on May twenty-one.

When the charge was read to the accused persons, they pleaded not guilty.

Ademuyiwa granted them bail in the sum of two hundred thousand naira with a reasonable surety each in like sum, who must have a reasonable means of livelihood and submit tax receipts for the last three years in the court.

He adjourned hearing in the matter till June four.

Court grants one hundred thousand naira bail to tanker driver

A tanker driver,Abdullahi Muhammed charged with reckless driving before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abuja,has been granted bail in the sum of one hundred thousand naira with one surety in like sum.

The thirty-five-year old driver, who drove a tanker marked was alleged to have damaged another tanker on April one, because of reckless driving.

Prosecutor,Corporal Jeremiah Elijah, had told the court that the accused who was heading toward the city centre from the Airport Road, Abuja, veered into the opposite lane of the road, leading to the airport due to his reckless driving.

He said the accused collided with the other tanker, property of one of the construction companies in the FCT, damaged it and obstructed vehicular traffic.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.

Chief Magistrate Hadiza Dodo adjourned hearing in the case till June eight.

Also granted bail by another Magistrate’s Court was a sales clerk, one Jude Iordye, alleged to have misappropriated three hundred and ninety-eight thousand naira being the proceeds of goods entrusted to him.

Chief Magistrate Josephine Obanor granted him bail in the sum of thirty thousand with one surety in like sum.

The magistrate adjourned the case till June seventeen for definite hearing.

Musician docked for alleged misappropriation

The Police has arraigned a thirty-three-year-old musician in Abuja, Pishar Simeon, over allegation of joint act, criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The accused, who was alleged to have committed the offence with one Kelechi Nwosu, now at large, was docked before an Abuja Senior Magistrate's Court.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Emmanuel Hoseni, told the court that a written petition was lodged at the Area Commander’s Metro Office, Maitama, Abuja, on May five by one Chukka Orji and Nwoekeka Orji.

He further told the court that the accused connived with Nwosu and converted the said money to their use and disappeared to an unidentified place.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge.

Senior Magistrate’s Idayat Akanni granted bail to the accused in the sum of one hundred and fifty thousand naira with a reasonable surety, who must be a civil servant of Grade Level eight and above and reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Akanni, however, adjourned hearing in the matter till June twenty-one.

In another development, a thirty-seven-year-year-old applicant, Nasir Ohiani, was also docked for cheating one Zainab Audu of National Hospital, Abuja, to the tune of five hundred and seventy thousand naira.

Prosecutor,Sergent Abu Okpanachi, told the court that the accused who claimed to be a marketer with Maclare Trust and Security Company, fraudulently collected the sum of two hundred and fifty thousand naira from the complainant on May twenty zero eight.

Okpanachi said the accused collected the said money under false pretence to buy a company shares for the complainant.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged charge while the prosecutor applies for an order of accelerated hearing to enable him to prosecute the case.

Akanni also granted the accused bail in the sum of two hundred thousand naira with a reasonable surety, who must be a civil servant not lower than Grade Level nine.

She said both surety and the accused should affix their passport to the bail bond and adjourned the case till June eight.

CUSTOM IMPOUNDS FOREIGN FISH TRAWLER FOR SMUGGLING

The Nigeria Customs Service, Eastern Marine Command, has seized a foreign fishing trawler in Oron allegedly used in smuggling of contrabands into the country.

The trawler marked K-081I51200 Felistar was conveying three hundred cartons of frozen chicken and one thousand six hundred cartons of baron wine.

Comptroller of the command, Abdulkarim Hussain said the smugglers came from Equatorial Guinea and passed through the Calabar channel before it was intercepted on the high sea at Oron waterways in Akwa Ibom.

Hussain said the fishing trawler had been cannibalised to suit smuggling purposes.

He said other seized goods worth four point zero three million naira by the command had been destroyed at the Oron Local Government Council premises.

The comptroller said the seized goods included apple, chemicals, second-hand clothing, hides and skin, rice, baron wine and used fridges, among others.

NEMA task councils on sanitation

The National Emergency Management Agency has reminded local government councils of their statutory responsibility of ensuring a clean environment.

Its South-West Zonal Coordinator, Iyiola Akande said in Lagos that the councils were performing below expectation in areas of sanitation and flood control.

Akande said State governments are currently taking over the responsibility of councils and because they cannot be everywhere, there are heaps of refuse, blocked drainages, flooding and erosion.

According to him,if councils were committed to sanitation and flood control issues, the spread of diseases and outbreak of epidemics in communities would reduce.

He said heaps of refuse had blocked half of drainages and culverts in communities and market places.

Police rescue kidnap victim.

The police in Rivers have rescued a retired permanent secretary in the state, Solomon Ordu, from his abductors.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rita Abbey said the victim was rescued in the early hours of Wednesday in a forest on Elele-Owerri road.

Abbey said policemen at the Elele division on Nigeria Police, working on a tip-off, stormed the forest and rescued Ordu, who was abducted on Monday.

She said the police arrested a suspect, from the same community with Ordu, at the scene of the rescue operation.

The Spokesperson urged the public to give useful information that would assist the police to check crime in the state.

Nigeria committed to free movement of goods and persons.

Nigeria is committed to the implementation of the Economic Community Of West African States Protocol on Free Movement of Goods and Persons.

Minister of Commerce and Industry, Jibril Martins-Kuye made the remark at the opening of a seminar on Obstacles to Intra-Regional Trade in West Africa-The Challenges of Non-Tariff Barriers and Poor Trade Settlement System.

Martins-Kuye said Nigeria was committed to the automation of all border posts and planned to ensure twenty-four hours service in the clearance of goods through the modernisation of customs procedure and trade facilitation programmes.

He called on all government agencies, such as the Customs, Immigration, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, NAFDAC, ministries, departments and agencies to play active roles in facilitating trade between Nigeria and other countries.

KAI PROSECUTES SANITATION OFFENDERS

The Environmental Sanitation Control Agency of Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline has prosecuted two thousand eight hundred and thirty-one persons for various environmental offences in the state last year.

One thousand nine hundred and ninety-two of the Persons were fined various sums during the period.

Commissioner for the Environment, Muiz Banire said six hundred and eighty-four of the offenders were convicted and sentenced to various jail terms ranging from three weeks to six months.

According to him, the mobile court set up to try environmental sanitation offenders discharged ninety-eight arrested persons for lack of evidence and for being under aged.

He said those arrested and prosecuted constituted environmental nuisances to the public.

The Commissioner said the Agency said made several visits to various places within forty-one Local Government and Local Council Development Areas to enforce and effect environmental compliance by residents.

Venezuela-based Nigerian bags five years imprisonment for hard drug.

A Nigerian based in Venezuela, Erute Orowo has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for importing one point six five zero kilogram of cocaine.

Justice Cecilia Olatoregun-Ishola of the Federal High Court, Lagos, who handed down the judgment, said Orowo should serve the jail term with hard labour.

She said nothing but greed led him into committing the crime.

The convict had earlier pleaded guilty to the charge.

Orowo was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on a three-count-charge of importing cocaine through a South African airline flight from Venezuela to Nigeria sometimes in November last year.

Counsel to the Agency, Raphael Mikaiye told the court that Orowo was apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, while the aircraft was being cleared by security agents.

Counsel to Orowo,Yinka Oyetunde urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying the accused did not waste the time of the court by pleading guilty.

Three arraigned for stealing Three hundred thousand naira.

The Police has arraigned three persons before an Abuja Senior Magistrate’s Court over an alleged Three arraigned for stealing Three hundred thousand naira theft.

The accused Tajudeen Animashaun, Mustapha Mohammed and Isah Ajadu all of Jayi Village Abuja were alleged to have committed the offence on Saturday last week.

Police Prosecutor, Corporal Emmanuel Adikwe, told the court that the matter was reported at the station by one Uche Okeke of Galadima Corner Shop, Gwarinpa Estate, on the same date the theft occurred.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the alleged theft, saying they knew nothing about the alleged missing money.

Senior Magistrate, Idayat Akanni, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of fifty thousand naira with a surety each in like sum, who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

She adjourned the case till June fourteen for hearing.

Car dealer charged for defrauding business partner.

A thirty-six year-old car dealer, Rotimi Agoro has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding his business associate of seven point seven million naira.

The prosecutor, Inspector Chris Takim, told the court that Agoro committed the offence sometime between twenty zero eight and twenty zero nine at Oko-Oba Agege in Ikeja.

Agoro, however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate, O.A Adedayo granted the accused bail in the sum of one million naira with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till June seven for further hearing.

NIMASA solicits ministry's support for enactment of legislation

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety has solicited the support of the Ministry of Transport in enacting a law to check maritime piracy and armed robbery.

It Legal Adviser,Mathew Egbadon said crimes were being committed on the sea and expressed regret that the Agency was handicapped in punishing the perpetrators due to lack of necessary legislation.

Egbadon said the Agency was not empowered to arrest or prosecute suspected criminals.

He said the timely passage of a legation would enable the Agency to prosecute or extradite criminals from other countries.

NAPTIP invites Yerima over his latest marriage

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other related matters has invited Senator Ahmed Yerima for questioning over his reported marriage to a minor.

Its Head of Communication and Media, Arinze Orakwe who confirmed the Senator’s presence said the Senator left after more than two hours of questioning by the Agency and was told to be available for further questioning on June fifteen.

Orakwe said Yerima told the panel that he has not contravened any law and he tendered his Marriage Certificate to the girl in a Shari’a Court.

He said the Agency made it clear to him that it had invited him to clear the air over the allegation of his marriage to a minor which contradicts the laws under the Child Rights Act.

Rumours started spreading in April over Yerima’s marriage to Marim Maged M. Eladly, daughter of his Egyptian driver who he paid one hundred thousand dollars as bride price.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has commended the Agency for its intervention.

The commission is prepared to collaborate actively with the agency in addressing the human rights issues raised by Yerima’s actions.

FOUR DIED IN LAGOS OVER THE WEEKEND

About six persons, including a suspected armed robber, died in the last four days in different parts of Lagos State.

Police Public Relations Officer,Frank Mba said some of the deaths recorded were as a result of road accidents and fighting.

Mba said a truck with allegedly ran over a forty-three-year-old man, at Agboju Bus Stop on the same day, a tipper loaded with sand somersaulted at Igbonla Road in Epe, killing two of the loaders.

According to him,one man of Oloti Village, Ikeja was allegedly, stabbed to death by one other during a fight under yet to be determined circumstances.

Mba said the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti had commenced investigation into the alleged murder which occurred on saturday.

He said the last death was a suspected armed robber killed on sunday at Ogudu Ori-Oke, when his gang engaged the Ogudu Police Division in a gun battle after a robbery operation.

The Spokesman said all the corpses were deposited at public mortuaries for autopsy.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency uncovers two kilogrammes of heroin

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has uncovered two kilogrammes of heroin, concealed inside stethoscopes at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The latest discovery is coming few days after ten kilogram of cocaine was abandoned at the same airport by a yet to be identified drug trafficker.

Its Head of Public Affairs, Mitchell Ofoyeju said the suspect who imported the substance had been arrested.

Ofoyeju said the fifty-four-year-old suspect imported the narcotic substance on April fifteen and he was apprehended during screening of passengers aboard an Emirates flight from India.

He said also a twenty-four-year-old suspect name withheld who ingested ninety wraps of substances that tested positive for cocaine weighing one point four nine five kilogram was arrested.

Both suspects would soon be charged to court.

Customs intercepts military uniforms at Lagos Airport

The Nigerian Customs Service has intercepted military uniforms imported by a yet to be identified person.

Murtala Muhammed Airport Command of the Customs,said the wears included one hundred and ninety-eight pieces of military camouflage uniform and fourty pieces of military hat.

Its Comptroller,Michael Adewole said officers of the command intercepted the consignment at the airport’s tarmac.

Adewole said the consignment was brought in through Saudi and Turkish airlines.

He said the command generated about seven billion naira between January and March this year.

The command handed over the intercepted military uniforms to a senior military officer identified as Ahmed Abdulkarim.
