GOVERNOR BABATUNDE FASHOLA

Lagos to stop carrying minor offenders in Black Maria.

Bayo Suleimon, Chairman, Lagos Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, said the state government would soon stop using Black Maria to convey minor offenders.
Suleimon said in Lagos that the government was planning to purchase modern vehicles that were secure to convey minor offenders, such as street traders.
“Black Maria is for safety, it is not for criminals alone, it conveys suspects and offenders. What happened when a person fell off a van in Yaba would not happen in a Black Maria.
Suleimon said that part of the duties of the Task Force was maintaining discipline and ensuring Lagos became “a state of our dreams”.
He said the Task Force was facing many challenges with residents of the state who were not ready to imbibe positive values incorporated in laws made by the state government.
Suleimon said the menace of illegal street traders and commercial motorcycle operators was a big challenge for the Task Force as offenders repeatedly went back to same offences for which they were apprehended.
