Boko Haram: Expert warns of fresh attacks on New Year Day

President of the Association for Industrial Security and Safety Operations of Nigeria, Ona Ekhomu, has warned the Federal Government to prepare for possible bomb attacks on New Year’s day, 2012.

He said the fact that Boko Haram terrorists struck on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve in 2010, those behind the 2011 Christmas day attacks might be tempted to follow the trend.

He said, “Since past is prologue to the future and the masters of Boko Haram tend to strike on anniversaries and on celebration days in order to maximise fatalities, they will probably carry out more spectacular attacks on New Year’s day 2012.”

Ekhomu, who described the Christmas day bomb attacks as a “hellish act of pre-meditated mass murder,” said the deliberate targeting of churches was designed to spark religious crisis in the country.

He said, “If Christians engage in reprisal, then the unity of our nation can no longer be guaranteed.”

The AISSON boss urged the Federal Government to change its counter-terrorism strategy from the current law enforcement model to a security model.

He said the government should not aim at arresting and prosecuting Boko Haram fighters after commiting acts of mass murder, but prevent terrorist attacks from occurring in the first place.

He expressed disappointment that despite the abundance of intelligence on the intentions of Boko Haram to attack churches on Christmas day, the terrorists could not be stopped prior to unleashing their catastrophic attacks.

Ekhomu advised Christians to disregard the plot to set them against Muslims, saying Boko Haram had been bombing mosques and killing Muslims since the inception of their campaign of terror.

He urged the government and its security agencies to aggressively tackle the Boko Haram threat as it was capable of undermining the confidence of people in the government.
