Gunmen kill 4 police officers in Gombe

The gunmen were reported to have had a free rein, shooting and detonating explosives.

Police authority on Thursday confirmed that gunmen suspected to be members of the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram have attacked three banks and a police station in Ashaka, Gombe State, killing four policemen including a Divisional Police officer.

According to agency reports, the suspected Boko Haram gunmen on Wednesday evening attacked banks, police stations and shops in Ashaka around 8p.m. The attacks, which lasted for one hour, caused a stampede as residents fled to safety.

The gunmen were reported to have had a free rein, shooting and detonating explosives.

Explosions and gunfire were also reported in Gaidam and Potiskum in Yobe State as well as some areas in Borno State close to Nigeria’s border with Chad at about the same time.

The Gombe state Commissioner of Police, Orubebe Ghandi, who confirmed the incident, said that the threats would be contained by the security forces.

Though he said that the details of the Ashaka attack is yet to reach him, he advised residents in the state not to panic as the police were on top of the situation.

Two weeks ago, there were explosions and gun fights between the police and Boko Haram insurgents in some parts of the state.
The attack comes a day after a school was set ablaze overnight. Authorities said no one was hurt.
