Fashola praises Nigerian Army for promoting peace, security.
Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has praised the Nigerian Army for helping to maintain peace and security in the state. Fashola gave the commendation when he received the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Onyeabo Ihejirika, in his office at Alausa, Ikeja. While commending Ihejirika for exhibiting his love for Lagos where he served as a General Officer Commanding, he urged him not to relent in professional leadership skills. Fashola also acknowledged the understanding of the army in the reconstruction works in Lagos which affected some military sites, including the Yaba Ordnance and the Signal Barracks. The governor urged the army to play a role in ensuring peaceful elections in April saying it should be a carnival of peace and not that of terror. Responding, Ihejirika said that army personnel would continue to promote peace and security in the state, especially toward the 2011 elections. Ihejirika said his visit to Lagos State was to assess the operational capability of his troops, their welfare and their readiness for the April elections. The two-day familiarisation visit by the army chief took him to army formations in the state. Areas visited included the 65 Battalion, Bonny Camp, Ikeja Cantonment, Ojo cantonment, and the military base in Badagry, as well as a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos.
