Police, commercial motorcyclists clash
Vehicular traffic was disrupted on Thursday evening on the Okota-Isolo road, Lagos, following a disturbance involving commercial motorcyclists and the traffic police at the Oke-Afa junction.
Eye witnesses said the motorcyclists were protesting against an accident, which they claimed, killed one of their colleagues.
In response, the police seized many motorcycles which they later carted away to an unknown destination.
Scores of other motorcyclists, who got wind of the disturbance, made hurried withdrawals as they approached the Oke-Afa junction.
Hundreds of passengers in commuter buses also abandoned their transportation, preferring to trek across the bridge, raising their hands as they walked past stern-looking armed policemen.
As at the time of filing this report, the traffic build-up is several kilometres long, with hundreds of vehicles at a standstill.
A senior police source, who confirmed the incident, said trouble started when a commuter bus, popularly known as molue, fatally knocked down a commercial motorcyclist.
According to the police officer, who elected to remain anonymous, the motorcyclists became enraged when information got to them that the bus driver had escaped, ostensibly with the connivance of the police.
He said the motorcyclists in the process attacked motorists and burnt down a police patrol van.
The source said the police had moved the molue to the Isolo Police Station where it is being detained.
