Sokoto gov poll: Police arrest six hoodlums
Six persons were arrested by the police in Sokoto State for alleged violence during Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adisa Bolanta, told the News Agency of Nigeria that two more suspects were arrested for allegedly smoking Indian hemp.
He said the command also sent some policemen to Mil Goma in Boding Local Government Area where the electoral process was disrupted by hoodlums.
It was gathered that trouble started in the village when one of the political party stalwarts objected to the sequence of voting arranged by electoral officials.
Following the stalemate, voting was delayed and as at the time NAN correspondents left the village at 4:45 pm, voting had not taken place.
Politicians and senior Independent National Electoral Commission officials however commended the electorate for their peaceful conduct during the poll.
In an interview with NAN, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Machido said the election was peaceful and well organised.
“I have been seeing elections in this state, but I have never seen anyone so peaceful, so orderly and organised like this one.
“This shows some level of maturity by the electorate and that’s kudos to the people of the state,’’ he said.
The INEC National Commissioner in charge of operations, Dr. Nura Yakubu, also said he was confident that the outcome of the election would not only be credible, but would be accepted by all.
Yakubu, who said he had visited Yabo, Shagari and Bodinga Local Government Areas to witness the conduct of the election, stated that he was impressed with the peaceful conduct of the electorate.
Similarly, the Senator representing Sokoto East, Ibrahim Gobir, commended the people for turning out in large number to exercise their civic rights.
A former governor of the state, Attahiru Bafarawa, also advised his fellow politicians to always ensure they rendered selfless service to the people.
He frowned on the attitude of many politicians who used their offices to enrich themselves to the detriment of the people.
