NIGERIA IMMIGRATION SERVICE BOSS

Alleged ‘Illegal’ Aliens Arrested In Ogun

Thirty suspected illegal immigrants were arrested in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The suspects were mainly Nigeriens and Togolese, though some of them claimed to be Nigerians from the northern part of the country.

Our correspondent gathered that the men and officers of the Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS) picked up the suspects in an operation which they carried out around Oke-Ilewo and Ibara areas within the Abeokuta metropolis.

According to a senior officer of the agency who does not want his name disclosed, the operation was normal routine, adding that, “today’s operation was very hectic, we were chasing these people around with guns until we caught them in a compound where we arrested them.”

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the suspects who identified himself as Garuba Sheu debunked the agency’s allegation that he is a non-Nigerian, claiming he is from Kano state.

According to him, “I am a Nigerian from Kano state and I have been in this part of the country for about six years now. So I do not understand why they are now calling me a non-Nigerian.

“My wife and children are at Sabo area here in Abeokuta, I only came to Oke-Ilewo to meet a customer that I want to help in digging a well before I was arrested,” he stated.

Another officer of the Immigration Services who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent that the command would do its work thoroughly and those found to be innocent will be freed.

The officer said, “what the command did was to arrest suspected immigrants, but on interrogation, those that are from the country would be allowed to go while non-Nigerians may be repatriated after due process has been followed.”

When our correspondent contacted the Command Comptroller in Ogun state, Dr. P. N. Uwasirike at the command headquarters in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, he said the level of insecurity in the country requires such action.

The Comptroller said the raid was a usual assignment that the command do carries out all the time.

Uwasirike said, “a few weeks ago, we paraded some illegal Indian immigrants we arrested from Ewekoro area of the state.

Also, last week, we paraded some Togolese that were involved in child trafficking.

These things we are doing are part of our constitutional duties and we will not relent in it.
