NURTW Chieftain, Olohunwa, Condemns Lagos Island Mayhem, Sues For Peace
Former Chairman of the National Union of Roads Transport Workers, Lagos State Chapter, Rafiu Akanni Olohunwa has condemned the mayhem that occurred on the Lagos Island, Monday.
He spoke from London against the backdrop of renewed fracas that reportedly claimed four lives.
He denied report linking him to the fracas, and sued for peace among the rampaging youths.
Olohunwa said he had been away in the UK to seek medical attention and could not have instigated anyone to unleash violence.
He noted that the challenges in the NURTW has predisposed it to criticisms and a ready alibi for criminality in any part of the state.
“I can’t be in London, attending to my health and be in Lagos, inciting people to violence at the same time. I plead with the youths to give peace a chance and avoid running afoul of the law.
The incessant violence and destruction will only reverse our developmental gains in Lagos State. We must support this government to serve us better,” he said.
He said though the incident was appalling, he is comforted by the ability of Governor Babatunde Fashola and Lagos monarch, Oba Riliwan Akiolu, to ensure peace reigns.
Residents have attributed the escalation of violence to activities of street gangs.
A similar incident last December had necessitated a security meeting in Isale Eko area.
The meeting was led by Bankole Segun, who was chairman , Lagos Island Community Development Committee, and other community leaders.
Divisional Police Officers of Ebute Ero and Adeniji Adele police stations, as well as white cap chiefs, like Chief Adesoji Ajayi Bembe (Obanikoro of Lagos), Lamina Sasi ( Sasi of Lagos), included those that attended the meeting.
The latest violent eruptions seemed to have made the peace parley and other security measures to check the street gangs pale into insignificance.
