Robbers burgle car at LASG Secretariat, cart away N3m.




Robbers on Tuesday evening burgled a Nissan Infinity car with registration number FK 670 EKY, parked in the premises of the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, and carted away N3 million.
A witness told journalists few minutes after the incident that the robbers in two tinted jeeps, blocked the car and took the amount said to have been kept behind the driver’s seat.

Chadian charged with assaulting fellow housekeeper.




A foreign national, who allegedly attacked a fellow housekeeper with a pair of scissors, was on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a one-count charge of assault.
The 25-year-old Chadian, Ahmed Bishara, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution said the accused hit his Nigerian colleague, Jimmy Sam, with the scissors used for cutting flowers on the head, causing a brain damage.
Sgt. Ubangha Ubi told the court that Bishara had on May 7 at Gerrad Road, Ikoyi, committed the offence following a disagreement.
He said Bishara was opposed to collecting the N12,000 provided by their boss for the cleaning of the house.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 338 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The Magistrate, A.A. Adefulire, granted accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till June 14 for further hearing. The burgled car was said to belong to a female contractor with the Lagos State Ministry of Rural Development who was at the secretariat to see a senior official of the ministry.
The victim, who was informed of the incident, could not understand how the robbers succeeded in breaking the side glass of the car and removed the money without anyone including the security men noticing.
She could not speak on the incident to journalists, as she was in shock. The driver, who as also in shock, could not speak.
The Commissioner, Lanre Balogun, and the Permanent Secretary, Babatunde Oshodi, were seen making frantic calls to security agents after the incident.
Balogun was visibly worried that the robbers carried out their action without officers of the Neighbourhood Watch, which his ministry oversees, noticing.
A member of the Neighbourhood Watch confirmed to journalists that the robbers arrived the car park at about 4 p.m. in two jeeps with tinted glasses.
He said the robbers succeeded in their act as the burgled car was parked in a secluded section of the car park.
Another official of the Neighbourhood Watch said the robbers blocked the entrance into the park.
A similar incident occurred last year when a gang of robbers invaded the secretariat, burgled a car and carted away N1 million.

30-year-old man electrocuted in Lagos.




The Homicide Section of the Lagos State Police Command said it has begun investigation into the death of a 30-year-old man, who was allegedly electrocuted on Tuesday while operating a machine.
The incident happened after midnight at No. 113 Iyamu St., Oregun, Lagos.
The man, identified as Idowu Odebe, was a machine operator in a food processing company in the area.
“He slipped and in an attempt to support himself from falling, held on to a naked wire and was instantly electrocuted.
Contacted, Lagos State police spokesman, Samuel Jinadu confirmed the incident, saying that investigation has begun into the incident.
Jinadu said the police have removed the corpse from the scene to a public mortuary for autopsy.
In another development, a motorcyclist was on Tuesday hit by a motorist at Cele Onirin along Ikorodu Road.
The motorcyclist died on the spot and that the corpse has also been deposited in a public mortuary for autopsy.
The incident has also been confirmed by the police.

Man arraigned for alleged attempt to defraud Union Bank of N1.8m.




A businessman, Ogundana Adekunle, was on Tuesday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly attempting to defraud Union Bank of N1.8 million.
Adekunle, 39, is standing trial before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, forgery and false pretence.
Adekunle was alleged to have forged a driver’s licence number AA40603AA and a Union Bank Plc dividend warrant number 00635293 in an attempt to defraud the bank.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Ope Hakeem, said the accused with others at large at Spring Bank Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, falsely presented the forged dividend warrant and the driver’s licence to cash the money.
He said the incident occurred on April 12 at about 4 p.m.
Hakeem said the accused presented the warrant for withdrawal of the N1.8 million knowing that he was not the genuine account holder.
He said the offence contravened Sections 464, 467 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Adekunle, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, O.A. Ogunbowale, adjourned the case till July 6 for further hearing.

Man, 30, arraigned for damaging factory machine.
A 30-year-old man, Hassan Haliu, was on Tuesday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly damaging a factory machine.
The accused, who appeared before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court, is facing a one-count charge of malicious damage.
Haliu, however, pleaded not guilty before Senior Magistrate Amos Adeyemi.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu, said the accused had a case to answer, alleging that he maliciously and unlawfully damaged the factory machine he was assigned to operate.
He said the damaged machine worth N800,000 was the property of Dolf Nig. Ltd.
He said the offence was committed on April 18 at about 1.00 a.m. at the company’s premises in Apapa, Lagos.
Inedu said the accused had contravened Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Adeyemi admitted the accused to a bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till May 19.

3 arraigned for alleged breach of peace.




Three persons on Tuesday appeared before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged attempt to breach the public peace.
Chinedu Emezerike (27), Seyi Ogunteduwo (25) and Solomon Akpen (25) are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and breach of the peace.
They, however, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi.
The prosecutor, Insp. A. Adegoke, told the court that the accused were arrested at about 1.30 a.m. in an uncompleted building while smoking Indian hemp.
He said the arrest took place at Fetuga Str., Ladi-Lak in the Bariga area of Lagos by policemen on night patrol.
Adegoke said the alleged offences were contrary to Sections 250 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each with a surety in like sum, and adjourned the case till June 6 for further hearing.

Man arraigned in Lagos for robbing victim with broken bottle.




A 21-year-old man, who allegedly used a broken bottle to rob his victim was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos.
Afees Abioye was alleged to have robbed one Victor Akpovwowo of a wallet containing N15,000 cash, documents and a Samsung handset.
The accused, who is facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court, however, pleaded not guilty.
But the Prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu insisted that the accused had a case to answer.
Inedu told the court that Abioye stabbed Akpovwowo with a broken bottle before robbing him of N15,000 cash and the wallet containing documents and the Samsung handset.
He said the accused with others at large, armed themselves with bottles and other dangerous weapons when they attacked Akpovwowo and injured him on the head.
According to the prosecutor, Akpovwowo was later treated at a hospital for the injuries he sustained during the attack.
He said the offence, which was committed on April 26 at Ebun junction, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos, contravened Sections 402 and 403 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The Senior Magistrate, Amos Adeyemi admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till May 17.

Court orders arrest of respondent in divorce suit.




A Grade ``A’’ Customary Court in Mushin on Tuesday issued a warrant of arrest for Mrs Olaitan Oyekanmi, a respondent in a divorce suit, for her refusal to appear before the court.
The Court President Dr Abayomi Ipaye said that the suit commenced on Dec. 23, 2010 saying that the respondent had refused to appear in court, in spite of several summons.
The petitioner Titus Oyekanmi, 47, a technician, pleaded with the court to dissolve his 11-year-old marriage with his estranged wife.
Oyekanmi further told the court that Olaitan threatened `` to set our house on fire and even kill me if she should receive any court summon.’’
The Court President adjourned the case till May 31 and ordered the court bailiff to arrest the respondent so that the court could hear her side of the story.

Okada rider” arraigned for stealing unregistered motorcycle.




The Police in Lagos on Tuesday arraigned Odion Igien, a 22-year-old commercial motorcycle “okada rider” for allegedly stealing unregistered Boxer motorcycle.
The accused is standing trial at an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ court Lagos on a one-count charge of stealing before Senior Magistrate Amos Adeyemi.
He pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Inedu said that Igien allegedly committed the crime on April 26, at about 6.10 p.m. at Apapa, Lagos.
He said the accused allegedly stole the unregistered Boxer motorcycle valued N170,000 by removing from where the owner, Sunday Mokweye parked it.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Sections 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2003.
The Senior Magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He adjourned further hearing till May 19.
