People rape for lack of regard for their victims - Cleric

The National Welfare Officer, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Olubayode Awosika, said that people who sexually abuse others did so out of disregard for others.

Awosika said in Lagos on Tuesday that people who engaged in sexual abuse saw other human beings as objects to be used and not as creations of God.

Awosika, Founder, Bethel Ministries, Lagos, was reacting to the alleged rape case between a hotel maid and the boss of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

He said rape was condemnable as it could be hurting and degrading to both the victim and the culprit.

The cleric regarded the ``abnormal’’ sexual behaviour as a deviation which, according to him, should be handled through proper medical attention.

He said no responsible and mentally sound person would engage in rape, adding that any person caught required psychiatric attention.

Awosika argued that no social or family problem could drive a person to engage in rape.

He pointed out that rape was always pre-meditated in most cases.
