GOVERNOR BABATUNDE FASHOLA

Commissioner Vows To Enforce Safety Standards.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has vowed enforce safety standards across the state and ensure that erring individuals and corporate organisations that failed to comply are punished.

The move followed the recent signing into law of the Lagos State Safety Bill by Governor Babatunde Fashola.

During a news conference at the commission’s conference room, Secretariat, Alausa in Ikeja, Lagos, the Director-General of the commission, Odebunmi Dominga, urged Lagosians to always be safety conscious.

The Director-General decried the recent spate of accidents in the state, saying that most of them were avoidable. She assured that the government is set to remedy the situation by enforcing compliance with rules and regulations.

“The Lagos State Safety Commission is empowered by Law to enforce safety standards on erring and non-compliant people and would certainly bring to book those that violate the Law,” she stated.

Dominga explained that the commission encourages the citizens to forward all safety concerns to it in order to address them critically with other arms of government.

She pointed out that the commission would intensify the public service safety management system through trained safety champions and leadership commitment, adding that the commission is set to ensure that safety advocacy measures were taken to the grassroots through the use of the right form of communication.

She, therefore, urged all stakeholders in public and private sectors to align with the commission to make safety a household practice in the state, saying that the commission would intensify its advocacy visits to clubs, schools, organisations and other places of social interactions in order to get the safety message to all parts of Lagos State.

On the misconception that the commission was duplicating activities of other government agencies, such as the State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Agency, LASEMA, and the Ministry of Special Duties, Dominga explained that the commission complements the efforts of these agencies in order to ensure better life for Lagosians.
