POLICE BOSS



Pastors docked for fraud.



The Pastor of God’s Covenant Church, Ejigbo, Ifeanyi Okoli,43, and his wife, Ngozi Okoli, 42, also a pastor, were on Friday docked at the Ejigbo Magistrates` Court, for allegedly defrauding a widow of her belongings.
The duo are standing trial on a three-count charge of fraud, contempt of court and stealing.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Maimunat Folami granted the accused bail in the sum of N1,000,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Olakunle Shonibare, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offences sometime in October of 2009.
The offences were committed at the church venue at No. 3, Brethren Avenue, Ejigbo, Lagos.
`` The pastor, his wife and one Godwin Mba, now at large, allegedly defrauded Mrs Theresa Onuorah.
``They obtained by fraud one Mercedes Benz with Reg. N0. GK 179 AAA, valued at N1.5 million, a set of upholstery chairs valued at N260,000 from her.
``They also unlawfully obtained from her three mattresses, 10 boxes of clothes, a water dispenser, electronics and all her other household utensils, all valued at N2 million.
``The total value of what was fraudulently obtained from her is N3,760,000, `` he said.
He said the accused obtained all of Onuorah’s property after tricking her into believing that they were not acquired ``in accordance with bible principles``.
``She was told that every property acquired by her late husband were got through occultism,`` Shonibare said.
Shonibare added that on April 18, at the Ejigbo Police Station, the accused in a suspected case of fraud and stealing were released on bail to one Mr Prince Ugonnatonne.
The prosecutor said: ``They were requested to report at the station on April 19 and every other day until the cases against them were finally disposed of.
``They deliberately did not appear at the station. Instead, the accused and their surety absconded from the church and their residents, `` he said.
He told the court that the accused were traced and re-arrested on July 31.
He said the alleged offences contravened Sections 133, 390 (9) and 419, Cap 31, Vol. II of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The case was adjourned till Aug. 14 for trial.
5 men charged with armed robbery
The police in Lagos on Friday charged five men before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing a woman of N92,000 cash and other valuables.
The accused, Imeh Macaulay, 66, Festus Anagwaonye, 27, Samson Tosin, 18, Samson Yinusa, 18, and Yahu Yakari, 24, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, robbery and receiving stolen property.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Ishiaku Babaji, told the court that Macaulay and Anagwaonye robbed one Mrs Acho Ukaha at her home with guns and dangerous weapons on April 13 at Alli Oweh St., Lekki, Lagos.
He said they carted away laptops and blackberry phones, valued at N785,000, gold jewellery worth N340,000 and cash of N92,000, all totalling N1.217 million.
He said Tosin, Yinusa and Yakari were arrested at their shops at Tejuosho Market, Yaba, Lagos for receiving the stolen items from Macaulay and Anagwaonye
The prosecutor said the trio knew that the items were stolen.
Tosin, Yinusa and Yakari pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties in like sum.
Macaulay and Anagwaonye pleas were not taken.
Magistrate Joy Ugbomoiko ordered that they be remanded in prison custody pending when the court would receive an advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
He said the alleged offences contravened Sections 1 (2) and 6 (b) and punishable under Section 1 (2) of the Robbery and Fire Arms Act, Laws of Nigeria.
The case was adjourned till Sept. 6, for further hearing.
Couple in court for pouring hot water on man
A 32-year-old man and his wife were on Friday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly pouring hot water on one Mr Ifeanyi Oluonye, thereby causing him bodily harm.
Anobi Uzoma and his wife, Chineye, 24, who appeared before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, are facing a two-count charge of assault and conspiracy.
The duo, however, pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate Oluyemisi Adelaja.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Unawunwa, alleged that the accused beat up Oluonye following a disagreement and thereafter poured hot water on him.
He said that Oluonye was treated at a hospital for the injuries he sustained during the attack.
Unawunwa said that the offence was committed on July 22 about 8.30 p.m. at Railway Line, Ijora-Badia, Lagos.
He said that the accused had contravened Sections 324 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Adelaja admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Sept. 26
Man, 27, arraigned for rape.
A 27-year-old man, Bolanle Oshinlowo, was on Friday charged before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly raping a 21-year-old woman.
The accused, who is facing a three-count charge of assault, stealing and having unlawful carnal knowledge of the woman, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Uche Kalu, told the court that the accused committed the offence as charged on July 13 at about 2.45 a.m. at Boundary, Ajegunle Apapa, Lagos.
According to him, the accused forcefully entered the victim’s room and threatened her with a sharp knife and had carnal knowledge without her consent.
Kalu further stated that the accused on same date, time and place stole his victim’s Nokia cellphone valued at N8,000 and N35,000 cash after raping her.
He said the accused contravened Sections 86, 358 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State 2003.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A. K. Shonubi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
She added that in addition to the bail condition, the surety should also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and his address verified by the prosecutor.
Shonubi adjourned further hearing till Sept. 12.
