FRSC BOSS

FRSC deploys 30,000 personnel for traffic control nationwide during Yuletide

The FRSC has deployed 30,000 personnel to 29 designated routes on the nation's highways to manage traffic and ensure accident-free Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Osita Chidoka made the announcement on Wednesday in Abuja at the public presentation of a book entitled, ``Road Sense''.

The book was written by Kayode Olagunju, an FRSC officer in charge of Transport Standardisation.

Chidoka said the commission would collaborate with other security agencies and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in checking the excesses of road users during the period.

He warned motorists and convoy drivers to abide by traffic rules and regulations, saying that the FRSC would no longer tolerate their excesses.

The Corps Marshal said that as at Dec. 4, the country had recorded 4,187 accidents in which 3,917 people died, while 15,386 sustained various degrees of injury.

He, however, said the 2011 accident rate was attained appreciable decrease when compared with the 2010 figure, where 5,330 accidents were recorded, in which 4,065 people died and 18,094 were injured.

Chidoka noted with regret that the country lost N960 billion yearly to road accidents, a figure he said, represented 30 per cent and 17 per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and national reserve, respectively.

He said the FRSC was improving on its facilities as well as exposing its personnel to local and foreign training for the realisation of the commission's mandate.

The author of the book, Olagunju, urged senior security officers to document their experiences for the benefit of junior and incoming officers.

FRSC Zone1 records 1,148 deaths from 8,060 accidents

FRSC Zone 1 recorded 1,148 deaths in 8,060 accidents in four states of the zone since January, Mr Samuel Obayemi, the Zonal Commander said on Wednesday in Kaduna.

The zone comprises Kaduna, Kano and Katsina states as well as Jigawa

Obayemi, said 6, 921 persons also sustained injuries in the various accidents.

According to him, the figures represent about 12.3 per cent increase over those of 2010.

“About 897 people died in a total of 6, 457 accidents in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states within the same period in 2010,” he said.

Obayemi blamed the accidents on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and overloading.

He said commercial motorcyclists recorded the highest casualties during the period though he did not elaborate.

Obayemi said the command has been sensitising road users on safe driving, adding that the implementation of the Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme (RTSSS) has yielded positive results.

He said the scheme has enabled stakeholders in the transportation industry to acquire additional knowledge regarding their responsibilities.

Obayemi commended the support rendered to the FRSC in the zone by the four state governments and called for continued collaboration to minimise accidents on the roads
