NDLEA arrests 59-year-old grandmother for exporting 1.500kg of cocaine
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it arrested a 59-year-old woman at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos for attempting to export 1.5kg of cocaine.
The anti-drug agency said the suspect was arrested at the weekend during the screening of British Airways passengers to London Heathrow airport with the drug neatly hidden in the sides of her luggage.
An e-mailed statement by the NDLEA made available to newsmen quoted its Chairman, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade as saying that the drug was detected at the luggage checking desk at the international wing of the airport.
“It is difficult to comprehend her motivation for drug trafficking at 59 years. Her action is disappointing. This is one wrong step with adverse consequences for the rest of her life.
``Preliminary investigation by the agency shows that the suspect had travelled to London five years ago. She is married with eight children, two males and six females all married with children,’’ Giade was quoted as saying.
According to the statement, Giade said that the 59-year- old grandmother claimed that she was promised the sum of 5,000 pounds (N1.3 million).
The NDLEA said that the suspect would be arraigned at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos in due course.
