Couple Sent To Prison Over Child Labour.
The police Onikan, Lagos Island, Lagos have arraigned a couple before the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of using their daughter for child labour against her wish and for depriving her of education.
Also arraigned with them in a separate charge was one Aboy Ifeanyi Ukaegbu, who was alleged to have sexually abused the teenager while serving as a domestic maid to his sister.
According to the charge sheet, the accused couple, Mr. Augustine & Mrs. Chioma Obilor, sometimes in 2011 at 8, Onokwa Street, Okokomaiko, Ojo, Lagos State, being the parents and guardians of their daughter, Endurance Obilor, aged 8, instead of sending her to school gave her out to one Ebere Iheka, who allegedly promised to help them in sponsoring her education.
But instead of Iheka fulfiling her promise, she gave her out to another woman identified as Nonye Ukaegbu a.k.a. Alhaja Amina, to use as a domestic maid against her wish.
It was alleged that Ebere Iheka started collecting money from Nonye Ukaegbu on behalf of the teenager’s parent without remitting same to them.
As if that was not enough, the younger brother to Nonye Ukaegbu, who resides in the same house with his sister, Aboy Ifeanyi, allegedly sexually assaulted the little girl at their 3rd Avenue, D Close, House 7, Festac Town, Lagos after he allegedly threatened to kill her.
The offence, the prosecutor S. Molo, claimed the couple committed are contrary to and punishable under Section 15(2) (a) and (b) punishable under Section 15(6) (a) of the Child Abuse Right Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2008, while he also claimed the rapist offence is felony to wit, defilment punishable under Section 516 and 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol. ii, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr. B. A. Sonuga admitted the couple to bail in the sum of N100,000 each with two sureties in like sum, while he granted bail to the suspected rapist in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The two cases have been adjourned for mention.
The accused persons were moved to Kirikiri and Ikoyi Prisons when they could not perfect their bail conditions in good time.
