COMPTROLLER GENERAL OF CUSTOM, ABDULLAHI DIKKO

Customs, SON partner to decongest seaports.

Maritime activities ended with the Nigeria Customs Service saying it was ready to collect duties on all the dutiable containers of electronics congested at the seaports.
Its Public Relations Officer, Wale Adeniyi said in Lagos that the service could not stop the clearance of such goods.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria and Consumers Protection Council had granted electronics importers up to August fifteen to clear all the backlog of containers.
This was the outcome of the agencies’ meeting with the importers at the Alaba International Market in Lagos.
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria had earlier set May thirty-one as the deadline for the importers to clear the ports of all their goods.
Adeniyi said the issue of customs coming into the matter would only be for collection of duties on those goods.
According to him, once the duty is paid, it is left for The Standards Organisation of Nigeria to determine whether the goods are suitable for the citizens in terms of quality or not.
SON Director-General, Dr Joseph Odumodu had said the organisation was prepared to make concessions so that the containers could come out of the ports.
He said executives of the Importers Association had asked to sign a letter of guarantee that the traders would always do genuine business.
Also, the Nigeria Customs Service, FederalOperations Unit Zone ‘A’, Ikeja, paraded two persons aged between 20 and 30 years allegedly caught with arms and ammunition at Agbara Outpost along Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
Acting Controller of the Unit,Victor Dimka said the arrest was made when the officers were carrying out normal stop and check of vehicles on the road.
Dimka said the officers suspected that the suspects looked jittery when all the passengers were ordered to disembark from the vehicle.
He said his officers immediately asked the suspects to open their bags and in the process the arms were discovered.
The controller said two double barrel guns, 30 live cartridges, three short guns, two axes, one cutlass, three identity cards and two GSM handsets were found in their bags.
According to him, customs is not only performing its statutory duty of revenue generation, trade facilitation and anti-smuggling, but also protecting lives of Nigerians.
He said the suspects would be charged to court after completion of the investigation.
