Police arrest 3 suspected kidnappers, parade 10 robbery suspects.




The Lagos State Police Command Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has arrested three suspected kidnappers, including a woman.
The command’s spokesman, Samuel Jinadu, announced the arrest while parading 10 robbery suspects before newsmen in Ikeja.
Jinadu said 4,000 dollars (about N600,000) ransom money, one pistol, two revolvers, eight rounds of ammunition and one live cartridge, were recovered from the suspected kidnappers.
He said the suspects kidnapped 24-year-old Pratish Joshi, an Indian, on April 2, at Piccolomonto Night Club, Idejo Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
He said the victim was kept in the house of one of the suspects at Lakowe in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos for four days.
According to him, their victim was only released after his family paid a ransom of 200,000 dollars (about N30 million).
Jinadu said one of the suspects claimed he knew the victim’s father as a wealthy person and also that the victim was the only child of the family.
He said the ring leader of the suspected kidnappers was still at large.
Meanwhile, four of the 10 robbery suspects paraded by the police allegedly belonged to a notorious gang whose leader was arrested in May.
His arrest, according to the police, followed the apprehension of his girlfriend at Mile 2, Lagos, while attempting to smuggle four AK-47 guns to the gang in Koko, Delta, for their operation.
Also paraded were suspected car robbers while nine suspected stolen vehicles, including four inter-state transport buses as well as five AK-47 guns, 23 live ammunition and nine cartridges were displayed.

Landlord’’ charged with assault, threat to life
A 31-year-old man, James Eze, who sublet his apartment to a tenant and assaulted him, was on Friday in Lagos arraigned on a four-count charge of threat to life and breach of the peace.
The prosecution told a Surulere Magistrates’ Court that Eze allegedly attacked his ``tenant’’, Onyedika Nwosu, in a bid to eject him.
Eze has, however, entered a ``not guilty’’ plea to the charge of assault, conspiracy, threat to life and breach of the peace.
Sgt. Sunday Olaide said the accused locked up the room he sublet to Nwosu in his flat and also used a soldier to threaten him.
Olaide said the accused also assaulted his neighbour, Donatus Obi, by using an iron rod to inflict injuries on him.
He said the offences, which were committed on May 29 at 7, Towolawi St., Coker Orile, Surulere, contravened Sections 86, 249 (d), 355, and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Senior Magistrate Aderemi Gbajumo granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till June 29 for further hearing.

Motorcyclist arraigned for allegedly stabbing colleague.
A Lagos commercial motorcyclist, Tobi Adesiji, was on Friday charged before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stabbing his colleague with a broken bottle.
Adesiji, 31, who is facing a charge of assault, however, pleaded not guilty.
But the prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Olaide, insisted that the accused committed the offence when he used a broken bottle to stab his colleague, Tajudeen Yusuf, on the neck.
He said Adesiji allegedly attacked Yusuf following an argument between them.
Olaide said the offence, which was committed on May 18 at 22, Thomas St., Apapa Road, contravened Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Chief Magistrate Abiola Soladoye granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must include a civil servant while the other surety must be a property owner in the community where the accused resided.
The case has been adjourned till June 24 for further hearing.

Court suspends hearing in divorce suit.
A Grade “A” Customary Court in Somolu, Lagos, on Friday suspended further hearing in a divorce suit until the petitioner provides proof that the respondent had been served the court papers.
The court president, Modupe Bajuliaye, said at the resumed hearing of the suit that the court needed a proof of the service before taking further steps on the case.
She gave the ruling after the petitioner, Olayinka Adeoye, (43) submitted that she served the court processes on the respondent, her estranged husband, who had twice failed to appear in court.
The court president adjourned the case till June 17 for the tendering of the evidence of service of the court papers on the respondent.
The petitioner, a trader, had prayed the court to dissolve the 17-year-old marriage, alleging that her husband, Steve Adeoye, (52) constantly beat her ever since he took another wife.
She told the court that she was no longer interested in the marriage which produced three children aged 15, 13 and eight years.

I am ready to reconcile if he leaves second wife, wife tells court.




I am filing for divorce because my husband took our three children away on holidays and refused to bring them back to me.
He packed out of the matrimonial home since 2009 after a misunderstanding and have since been living with his second wife,’’ an estranged wife told a Mushin Customary Court in Lagos.
Mariam Olaitan, a 36-year-old trader, however, told the court that if her husband Hakeem Olaitan would return home, she was ready for reconciliation.
She also pleaded with the court to order her husband to grant her the custody of their three children aged six, four and two.
She said since taking the children for the last holiday, Olaitan had denied her access to them or allowed her to visit them.
The respondent, Hakeem Olaitan, a middle age trader in building materials, however, consented to the dissolution of the six-year-old marriage.
He accused Mariam of differentiating between her children and those of the second wife, which he said, he would not allow.
The respondent’s mother, Ashiawu Olaitan, who was present in court, told the court that she liked Mariam but she was too aggressive for any of their family to control.
The court President, Abayomi Ipaye, blamed the couple for their mistakes and appealed to the respondent’s mother to reconcile them as Mariam was still interested in the marriage.
Ipaye adjourned the case till June 14 and ordered the respondent to bring the first two children to court on the adjourned date.
He also handed over the last of the children who was brought to court by the respondent’s mother, to Mariam, saying he still needed motherly care.

Estate agent in trouble over N1.5m rent fraud.
For allegedly fleecing would-be tenants of N1.5 million, an estate agent, Omo-Ade Afolayan was on Friday charged before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing to which he has, however, pleaded not guilty.
Afolayan, 41, was alleged to have collected N1.5 million from several people under the pretext of letting out a four-flat tenement to them.
The prosecutor, Insp. Eshiet Eshiet told the court that the accused after collecting the rent for several years failed to provide the accommodation.
He said the offence which was committed on April 24 at Abaranje Road, Ikotun, a Lagos suburb, contravened Sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused, on conviction, may be sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
Magistrate M.O. Olajuwon admitted the accused to a bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till July 4 for further hearing.

Two salesmen, eight accomplices docked for allegedly stealing car paints valued at N15m.
Two salesmen and eight accomplices were on Friday docked at an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing car paints valued at N15 million.
He accused are Anthony Egbufor, 28; Uzor Abazie, 23; Orife Emmanuel, 25; Emeka Nwanmiri, 25; Charles Okolie, 25; and George Ayodeji, 36.
Others are Stanley Okafor, 22; Lanre Adedayo, 33; Ahanna Ugwu, 27; and Victor Okafor, 28.
Egbufor and Abazie were alleged to have stolen the car paints and accessories valued N15 million from their employer, Emeka Onwurah.
Their accomplices were said to have received the stolen items for sale and remitted the proceeds to the accused persons.
The accused, who were standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen property, however, entered a ``not guilty’’ plea.
The prosecutor, ASP Innocent Effiong told the court that Egbufor and Abazie, had been stealing Onwurah’s goods on different occasions while the eight accomplices were receiving the items.
Effiong said the accomplices knew that the car paints and accessories were stolen from the complainant.
He said the complainant only discovered the theft on May 13 at 4 Beckley St., Ebute Meta.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 427 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
If convicted, the accused could be sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
The Chief Magistrate, Philip Ojo admitted each of the accused to N250, 000 bail with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned further hearing till June 8.

Two remanded in prisons custody for defrauding 633 intending tenants of N49m.
An estate agent Bayo Lawal and one Femi Johnson, who allegedly duped 633 intending tenants of N49 million, have been ordered remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons till June 24.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on Friday arraigned the duo before Justice Habeeb Abiru of an Ikeja High Court on a 119-count charge bothering on conspiracy and fraud.
The EFCC said the 46-year-old Lawal and Johnson, 50, collected over N49 million from about 633 intending tenants, under the pretext of securing accommodation for them.
EFCC counsel, Anselem Ozioko said the accused lured their victims by promising to lease them the apartments located at 15 Sokunbi St., Mushin, and 55 Olaiya St., Mafoloku.
One of the buildings, according to the EFCC is made up of 19 flats and four shops, but they failed to deliver on their promises after collecting money from the intending tenants.
Among those allegedly defrauded by the accused are Lukman Balogun, Oloyede Babatunde and Kehinde Lawal, who petitioned the EFCC to investigate the matter.
The EFCC said the offences, which were committed between Jan. and Dec. 2008, contravened Sections 390 (9), 419 and 467 (1) (b) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C17, Vol. 2 , Laws of Lagos State 2003 .
It also contravened Section 3(1) of the Advance Fee and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
The two accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
While ordering them remanded in prisons custody, Abiru adjourned hearing in their bail application till June 24..

Alleged fake nurse docked for certificate forgery.
A 25-year-old man, Tokunbo Ajayi, who allegedly impersonated a nurse using a forged Nursing and Midwifery Certificate was on Friday arraigned in Lagos.
Ajayi is standing trial before Demi Ajayi of a Yaba Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of forgery.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Chinalu Uwadire told the court that the accused on Sept. 9, 2006 forged the notification registration as a general nurse with reference No. M&MCN/2006/165, purported to have been issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Uwadire said the accused also forged the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Certificate No. 003/06 /84276 purported to have been acted upon as genuine.
He said Ajayi, therefore, committed an offence which contravened Section 467 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate granted the accused bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till June 17 for trial.

Teenager admits stealing baby.
A 19-year-old woman, Toyin Gbadamosi, accused of stealing a one-month old baby, on Friday admitted to the offence under cross-examination at the Ilupeju-Oshodi Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Gbadamosi told the court, I stole the baby because I fear that I might not be able to have a child of my own as a result of the several abortions I had done.``
Meanwhile, the accused pleaded not guilty to the offence at her first arraignment last week.
Gbadamosi at the resumed hearing of the case on Friday changed her plea to ``not guilty’’, an act that the prosecution vehemently opposed.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Festus Oseghale, said that the accused committed the alleged offence on March 25 at Oko-Mallam Mosafejo St., Oshodi, Lagos.
He said Gbadamosi was facing a one-count charge of stealing.
Oseghale told the court that the accused stole the baby, named Chichi, one of the twin babies of Mrs Biola Agbo.
Oseghale submitted that the offence contravened Section 371 Cap 17, Vol. II of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.
The Magistrate, O.M. Ajayi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N400, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case to June 27 for further hearing.
