Security men, conductor arraigned for attempting to steal tricycle

Two security men and a conductor were on Monday in Lagos charged before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to steal a tricycle belonging to a barber.

The accused, Taofeek Matti, 29, Hammed Buhari, 33, and Kehinde Mudushiru, 28, are facing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempted theft.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Olaide, told the court that the offence was committed on July 1 at Orile-Iganmu, Lagos.

He said the trio sent a 12-year-old boy, a tricycle repairer, to kick-start the tricycle belonging to one Mr Emmanuel James.

The prosecutor said the accused attempted to steal the tricycle valued at N300,000, but were caught through the minor who identified them.

He submitted that the offence contravened Sections 509 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The Chief Magistrate, Abiola Soladoye, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till Aug. 10 for further hearing.

Father, son arraigned over assault

A father and his son were on Monday charged before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly assaulting a food vendor.

The accused Temitope Adebeshin (40) and his son, Dare (20) are facing a three-count charge of forcibly entering a shop, assault and damage.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Insp. Adejoke Akinlebi, said the accused had on June 15 forcibly entered Mrs Esther Akpan’s shop at 10, Adeleye St., Bariga and beat her up.

He said Adebeshin and his son, a student of the Lagos State Polytechnic, allegedly damaged glass cups, plates and other property, valued at N20,000.

Akinlebi alleged that they also destroyed a pot of soup in the shop, offences, he said, contravened Sections 81, 355 and 451 of the Criminal Code, laws of Lagos State.

The Senor Magistrate, Bola Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 each with one surety in like sum.

The case has been adjourned till Aug. 17 for mention.

Two arraigned in Lagos for alleged possession of firearms

Two men, Abubakar Umoru, 50, and Seidu Suraju, 40, were on Monday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly possessing firearms and ammunitions.

The duo are facing trial before a Yaba Magistrates’ court on a three-count charge of conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Chinalu Uwadiore said the accused were apprehended by the Nigeria Custom Service at Gbaji checkpoint along Seme-Badagry Highway on May 23, and handed over to the police.

Uwadiore told the court that the accused, who were on their way from Ghana, had in their possession one America Metallic pistol C9 number P1369144 without a valid license.

He said the accused claimed they received a black nylon containing the pistol with 35 rounds of 9mm live ammunitions and 20 rounds of 9mm blank ammunitions from one Ibrahim Usman.

The prosecutor said the accused received and perfectly concealed the arms in the spare tyre of their BMW car with registration No. CV 48 JJJ knowing same to be unlawful.

Uwadiore said the offence contravened Sections 28, 127 and 516 of firearms (special provision) Laws of Lagos State.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Demi Ajayi granted them bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum each.

She adjourned the case till July 18 for further hearing.

Man sues Briscoe over alleged sale of substandard vehicle

A Lagos-based media practitioner, Mr Akin Fadeyi on Monday dragged R.T. Briscoe Nigeria Plc-- an auto-dealing company-- before an Ikeja High Court for allegedly selling him a substandard vehicle.

Fadeyi is seeking the replacement of the vehicle which he purchased in 2008 and a total sum of N2 million as damages.

However, when the matter came up for mention before Justice Josephine Oyefeso, the representatives of the company and its counsel were absent in court.

Fadeyi in the originating summons filed by his lawyer, Mr Baba Dennis, alleged that he purchased the vehicle, Toyota Corolla 1.8 GL (Automatic Transmission) on Sept. 24, 2008 for N3.45 million.

He claimed that only two weeks after he bought the car, it started mal-functioning and he started taking it to the company’s workshop for one repair or the other.

The claimant alleged that the company did not treat his complaints with ``any modicum of seriousness” despite the fact that he visited its workshop and other sections, including customer care, for more than 50 times.

According to him, all attempts to compel the company to rectify the vehicle’s problems or replace it proved abortive.

Fadeyi further claimed he could not have been responsible for the faults which surfaced in the gear system, the door and the air-conditioning system of a vehicle supposed to have been purchased new.

The claimant, who said he had suffered various degree of hardship as a result of the vehicle asked the court to compel Briscoe to replace it with a brand new and faultless car of the same model and make.

He also asked for N1 million each as general and special damages as well as the cost of instituting the suit.

The matter was adjourned to Sept. 27.

Man bags 7 years imprisonment for stealing N5,500 wrist watch

A Shomolu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a 22-year-old ex-convict to seven years imprisonment without an option of fine for stealing a wristwatch valued at N5,500.

Senior Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi sentenced Adewale Adeleye after he pleaded guilty to breaking into a house and stealing the watch.

She sentenced Adeleye to seven years imprisonment for breaking into the house and one year for stealing.

The magistrate said the sentences would run concurrently.

She urged Adeleye to repent from committing crimes.

Adeleye, who claimed to be a commercial motorcyclist, had pleaded guilty to the two-count charge during his arraignment.

He, however, said he would not go into crime again

The prosecutor Insp. Adegoke Akinlebi said Adeleye broke into the house of one Mrs Sumbo Adenuga at No 96, Igiolugbin, St., Pedro in Shomolu.


Akinlebi said that the convict committed the offences on June 20, noting that they contravened Section 411 and 390 0f the Criminal Code of Lagos State.

Man docked for stealing motorcycle

The police on Monday in Lagos arraigned a 20-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Mukaila Musa, before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court, charged with stealing a motorcycle, valued at N125,000.

The accused is facing a two-count charge of felony and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Adegoke Akinlebi, said that the accused and others at large conspired to commit felony at Odunsi Junction, Bariga, Lagos.

Akinlebi alleged that Musa and the others stole a Bajaj motorcycle, property of Mr Ajibade Oluwaseun of 6, Salisu St., Ikorodu, Lagos.

He said the offences were committed on June 25.

Musa, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor said his offence contravened sections 516 and 390 Criminal Codes, Laws of Lagos State.

The Senior Magistrate, Bola Osunsanmi, granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two suites in like sum.

He adjourned the case till Aug. 1 for trial.
