The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other related matters has invited Senator Ahmed Yerima for questioning over his reported marriage to a minor.
Its Head of Communication and Media, Arinze Orakwe who confirmed the Senator’s presence said the Senator left after more than two hours of questioning by the Agency and was told to be available for further questioning on June fifteen.
Orakwe said Yerima told the panel that he has not contravened any law and he tendered his Marriage Certificate to the girl in a Shari’a Court.
He said the Agency made it clear to him that it had invited him to clear the air over the allegation of his marriage to a minor which contradicts the laws under the Child Rights Act.
Rumours started spreading in April over Yerima’s marriage to Marim Maged M. Eladly, daughter of his Egyptian driver who he paid one hundred thousand dollars as bride price.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission has commended the Agency for its intervention.
The commission is prepared to collaborate actively with the agency in addressing the human rights issues raised by Yerima’s actions.
