The National Emergency Management Agency has reminded local government councils of their statutory responsibility of ensuring a clean environment.
Its South-West Zonal Coordinator, Iyiola Akande said in Lagos that the councils were performing below expectation in areas of sanitation and flood control.
Akande said State governments are currently taking over the responsibility of councils and because they cannot be everywhere, there are heaps of refuse, blocked drainages, flooding and erosion.
According to him,if councils were committed to sanitation and flood control issues, the spread of diseases and outbreak of epidemics in communities would reduce.
He said heaps of refuse had blocked half of drainages and culverts in communities and market places.
