Car dealer faces N14.4m theft charge

A car dealer was has been arraigned over alleged theft of nine assorted cars valued at N14.4 million and forgery of cheques worth N3.9 million.

The accused, Thaddeus Idama was brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court on a seven-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and issuance of dud cheques.

Prosecutor, Inspector Nicholas Atunmoye, told the court that the accused had between September and October 2009 in Lagos took delivery of the nine unregistered cars from some dealers.

He said the cars included four Toyota Corolla, two Honda Accord and two Nissan Maxima belonging to Messers Olalekan Daramola, Francis Okorom and Oludare Oyegunle.

Atunmoye also alleged that the accused obtained N1.7 million each from two prospective buyers, Messers Uche Azoribe and Ajayi Oluwaseun with the promise to deliver the cars to them.

He said the accused issued four dud cheques valued at N3.9 million to Firm Side Nigeria Ltd, Lagos, adding that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 419 and 519 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Folashade Kayode, adjourned the case till August 11 for further hearing.
