The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has advised the Federal Government to enact legislation that will make kidnapping a capital offence.
Its Director-General,Jide Mike who made the suggestion in Lagos said the legislation would deter kidnappers from carrying out their nefarious activities.
Mike said capital punishment would discourage kidnappers and make the country more attractive to foreign investors.
He said the suggestion became imperative because of the grave implications of kidnapping on the country’s economy.
The director-general said kidnapping, which was initially targeted at expatriates, had now been extended to indigenes and non-indigenes of the South Eastern part of the country.
He said the intention of kidnappers was to destroy the huge resources of the country and its investments.
Mike said the inability of the Nigerian police to arrest the situation was a failure of the security system.
He said Association appreciated recent measures taken by the Inspector General of Police by transferring officers in the affected areas.
