Police to monitor elections with satellite imaging.

The police is to use satellite imaging gadgets to monitor the 2011 general elections nationwide to check malpractice.

Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone two,Azubuko Udah said the police were preparing well for the elections and would employ the gadgets if made available to cover all loopholes in election monitoring.

Udah expressed satisfaction at the performance of the police in the February six governorship election in Anambra and gave the assurance that the police would do their best in the general elections.

He advised politicians to eschew violence and fraud to make the general elections free, fair and credible in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy.

According to him,the police would deal with any politician who would want to cause violence during the elections.

He said Inspector General of Police has vowed that the Nigeria police will do their job and will not give anybody any opportunity to blame the police for any electoral misdemeanor.

The Police Boss said the police had also been collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission and other agencies to ensure the country has credible elections in 2011.

The Nigeria Police Force, is making progress in unraveling the assassins of Otunba Dipo Dina.

Dina, a frontline politician from Ogun State and Action Congress gubernatorial candidate in the 2007 general election was killed in Ota, Ogun State on January 25.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone two,Azubuko Udah said two suspects had been apprehended in connection with the matter and were still in police custody.

Udah confirmed that reports reaching him from the Ogun State Police Command, said appreciable progress is being recorded on the case.

According to him,the Federal Criminal Investigation Department was currently handling the case as it had been transferred to it by the Ogun state command.

Udah said the state police command or the zone had not received any new information regarding those behind the killing of Bayo Ohu, besides what the Lagos State Commissioner of Police said months back.

He said inter-border robberies along the major roads in Lagos and Ogun States have been considerably stemmed since he assumed office in January.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police Zone two,Azubuko Udah has advocated re-orientation and a return to societal core values as solutions to the problem of corruption in the police force.

Udah said the core values respected in those days are no more being respected as Corruption is pervading every facet of the society.

He expressed regret that many policemen were tainted by corruption and had lost their self-esteem.

Udah attributed the low level of success recorded in community policing across the country to the lack of trust in the police by members of the public.

According to him, apart from the application of disciplinary measures against policemen who committed offences, the police authorities had expanded the Chaplaincy to admonish officers on the need for attitudinal change.

He said the police authorities are training and re-training, working inwardly to re-orientate policemen, to tell them that they have to get their self-esteem back and treat members of the public with respect.

Nigeria Police Force, has said the need to curb crime is responsible for the low participation of policemen in sports.

It said the upsurge in crime has made the police authorities to deploy its men to fight crime.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Zone two,Azubuko Udah said the police were still recruiting credible sportsmen and women and would release more of them to participate in different sporting activities.

Udah said police officers such as Sunday Bada, Chioma Ajunwa, Samuel Peter and a host of others had distinguished themselves in their chosen sports internationally.

He said the biennial Police Games for sportsmen and women in the force to showcase their talents would be resuscitated to discover talents for the country.
