Airport Police Command calls for modern gadgets to combat crime

The Airport Police Command has called on the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to support them with modern security devices to enhance security at the airports.

The new Commissioner of Police at the Command, Akila Gwary, said in Lagos that his men needed modern equipment to work with.

There are so many things to be done which FAAN and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority definitely need to look into," he said.

Gwary disclosed, however, that the authorities concerned were aware of the challenges and had promised to effect changes.

He stressed the need to continually upgrade training of the police and FAAN security men to tackle the level of threats with the changing face of crime across the world.

The CP said that there was need to go more scientific, to proactively check some of the threats.

Gwary said that the command had been able to reduce congestion at the airport terminals, particularly the departure halls.

``There were too many people coming into the airport, some to receive or see their people off. We have succeeded in reducing that and the airport is not as congested as it was before.

``People can now move freely. This Christmas period, a lot of people are coming in and we will continue with what we have to ensure that the infrastructure at the airport are safe,’’ he assured.

He also said that security had improved at the airport and its environment.
