24 vehicles burnt in fresh Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash
The crash took place at the same spot where 10 trucks got burnt at a spot near Danco Filling Station outward Lagos , according to an alert by the Federal Road Safety Commission.
The vehicles are one saloon car, five minibuses, one luxury bus, 11 trailers, four tankers and two pickup vans.
A total of 176 people were affected by the incident although none of them was killed.
The cause of the crash was a fire that broke out from a tanker after it upturned on the expressway and fuel started gushing out of its hold.
Commanding Officer, FRSC RS 2 (Lagos and Ogun states commands), Assistant Corps Marshal Demola Lawal, confirmed the crash, saying two persons were injured.
The gushing fuel led to a fire that affected the other vehicles.
Road safety officials, policemen and firemen swiftly deployed in the scene although the 24 vehicles continued to burn till Saturday morning.
FRSC advised road users to take the following alternative routes:
(1) Lagos – Epe – Ogijo – Sagamu – Ijebu Ode
(2) Lagos – Sango Ota – Papalanto – Ofada – Sagamu Interchange
(3) From Ibadan, take sagamu Interchange – Ofada – Papalanto – Sango Ota – Lagos
(4) Ijebu Ode – Epe – Lekki – Lagos
Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, visited the scene at 11a.m on Saturday, where he expressed shock at the extent of carnage.
After some hours, security agents were able to clear one lane on each side of the road. But they called on construction companies to assist with cranes to enable them to remove the wreckage.
The earlier crash on Thursday had caused a gridlock that extended into Friday.
Road users spent between four and five hours between Redemption Camp and Sagamu Interchange between Thursday and Friday.
Many road users had to divert to Old Lagos-Sagamu Road, which also led to a gridlock.
