Why I cannot prosecute kidnap suspect

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar has urged the public to provide the police with useful information with which to prosecute a policeman accused of kidnapping in Delta.

Abubakar, who made the appeal in Asaba while responding to questions during a stakeholders meeting, said the police had so far no evidence to prosecute the said policeman.

“I can’t sanction nor prosecute anyone without evidence. It is easy to call anybody a thief but difficult to prove that the person is a thief,’’ Abubakar said.

The suspect was invited to the Force Headquarters, Abuja for interrogation over alleged involvement in kidnapping but was later released.

Abubakar, however assured the public that investigation into the matter was continuing.

The IGP said he was in the state to seek support and partner with the people in building a virile police force.

He described Delta as a peaceful state and appealed to the residents not to allow kidnapping, armed robbery and other vices to reign in the state.

The IGP warned the public against giving gratification to the police, saying they should channel whatever donations they have for the police to the state command.

Abubakar called on traditional rulers to stop using policemen in land allocation matters as they had no authority to issue land to anybody.

He also warned that the law against the use of siren and vehicles with tinted glass by unauthorised persons was still on.

The IGP gave a grace of two weeks to vehicle owners with tinted glasses to remove them or face prosecution.
