Customs Impounds N92m Fake Drugs, Goods

The Zone C department of the federal operations of the Nigeria Customs Service has announced the seizure of a trailer load of 1,195 cartons of assorted drugs, used tyres and frozen chicken/turkey.

Also, four persons were reportedly arrested and their vehicle impounded during the said period, just as he disclosed that the suspects would be handed over to NAFDAC for prosecution after investigation.

According to Ahmed Mohammed, comptroller of federal operations in charge of the zone, who made this disclosure in Benin City, put the value of the sub-standard goods at N91.6 million.

He further disclosed that the trailer load of the fake drugs was intercepted at Onicha-Ugbo in Delta State on its way from Kano State, after a tip off, adding that all the consignments were seized by the office in the last one month.

A break down of the seized goods are as follows: 125 cartons of assorted drugs, 1,050 cartons of frozen chicken/turkey, 364 pieces of used tyres and seven used vehicles.

While handling the seized drugs to the Edo State office of the National Agency for Food, Drugs and Administration Control (NAFDAC),  Mohammed who disclosed that the drugs lacked official NAFDAC registration numbers, added that the drugs were not properly labelled as the labels were written in foreign languages.

The Customs boss, who said the agency is fully committed in fighting the influx of sub standard goods, said the rate of smuggling has drastically reduced in the country.

He advised importers to make use of the recognised routes of bringing in their goods to the country as well as standard goods and also pay the necessary custom duties to the relevant authorities.
