Conductor bags 1 month imprisonment for theft.

A 19-year-old bus conductor was on Tuesday sentenced to one month imprisonment for allegedly stealing from a youth corper.

The convict, Gabriel Ileso, was given an option of N1,000 fine after his guilty plea before a Karu Magistrate's Court.

The Police Prosecutor, Jerry Tangshak, had told the court that the convict with three others now at large on Dec. 31, 2010, formed common intention and apprehended one Samuel Ibilaye, a corp member.

Tangshak told the court that the convict collected the corper's wallet containing his identification card , MTN and ZAIN Sim cards and the sum of N5,000.

He said the convict was however, arrested at Nyanya Tipper Garage on Jan. 1 while the wallet with N1,500 was recovered from him.

He said the offence of joint act and theft committed by the convict contravened sections 79 and 287 of the Penal Code Law, respectively.

The convict who pleaded guilty to the charge pleaded for leniency, saying that he would not commit the offence again, pleading with the complainant for leniency.

The Prosecutor, however, urged the court to try the convict summarily pursuant to section 157(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) and applied for compensation of N4,200 to be paid to the complainant.

Magistrate Nkwadimi Buba, however, sentenced him to one month imprisonment and ordered that the compensation applied for by the prosecutor should be paid by the convict.

Woman jailed 5 months for giving false information.

A woman, who falsely claimed that her 12 year-old daughter was kidnapped, has been sentenced to five months imprisonment by an Abuja Magistrate's court.

The convict, Agorioge Yomi, 30, of Karu, a satellite community of the FCT, was on Tuesday sentenced by the court in Abuja, on two count charges of giving false information and defamation of character.

The Magistrate, Habiba Bello, sentenced the accused after she pleaded guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Simon Emmanuel, told the court that Yomi had reported to the police on Dec.
20 that she boarded a bus with her 12- year-old daughter from Lugbe to Berger Junction.

Emmanuel said the convict had alleged that on the way the driver diverted to Gwarinpa Express roundabout and threw her out of the vehicle and kidnapped her daughter, Anuoluwapo Oladapo.

He said the suspect also accused one Dr Babawale of being behind the kidnap but the police found her claims to be false.

Emmanuel said the police found Yomi's daughter in a hotel, where she had hidden her.

He said Yomi's action contravened the penal code.

The magistrate sentenced Yomi to five months in prison but gave her an option of paying N1,000 fine for the first offence and N1, 500 for the second offence.
