Police deploy 22,600 men for Delta re-run election.

The Nigeria Police have deployed 22,600 conventional and 2,835 mobile policemen to monitor the re-run election slated for Jan, 6 in Delta.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, B Department Operations, Audu Abubakar who announced this in Asaba said no fewer than six officers would be deployed to man each of the polling centres in the state.

According to him, We have deployed 22,600 officers and men of conventional police and 45 PMF units of 63 officers per unit from various squadrons.

Abubakar said The Federal Government is determined, INEC is ready and we are given a matching order to be here and ensure that the election is not only credible but free and fair.

In his word My call to all the non-governmental organisations, foreign and local election observers and good spirited individuals is for them to collaborate with INEC officials and the security agents.

The DIG had a closed door meeting with the 14 gubernatorial candidates contesting in the re-run election.

Great Ogboru, the Democratic Peoples Party candidate said the DIG underscored the seriousness of the election.

The meeting with the DIG was quite instructive; he made us to understand that there was a national seriousness attached to the elections and that it was a litmus test.

We were reminded that thuggery and violations of the Election Act will not be tolerated,'' Ogboru said.

On his part, the state PDP Chairman, Peter Nwaoboshi, said the party was satisfied with the security arrangement, and ready for the re-run.

CD urges security agencies to investigate murder of rights activist.

The Anambra chapter of Campaign for Democracy, a civil society group, has urged security agencies in Abia to investigate the murder of Chidi Nwosu, its Vice-Chairman for the South-East Zone.

A statement by Uzor Uzor, the Chairman of the chapter, in Onitsha, Anambra, said a probe of the incident was necessary to unravel the mystery behind his death.

It further stated that the assassins ransacked the deceased’s house and stole more than N80,000.

“We call on the Inspector-General of Police and the Acting Commissioner of Police in Abia and other relevant security agencies to arrest the murderers of Nwosu so that they could face the weight of the law, it added.

Nwosu was murdered by gunmen at about 12:48 a.m. in his Amaeke Abam country home in Arochukwu LGA in Abia, on Dec. 29 in the presence of his wife, Amaka.

Meanwhile, the deceased was appointed the director of Abia Rubber Company by the state government before his death.

We Did Not Attack Magistrate’.

The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Special Offences Unit, Alausa, Ikeja, has exonerated its men from the alleged assault of a magistrate in Isolo last week.

Chairman of the unit, Bayo Sulaimon, a Superintendent of Police, said his men were not involved in the maltreatment of the Lagos magistrate.

Sulaimon said We do not have any officer in this unit with the name ASP. Amuda. There were many policemen from different units and divisions on the ground that day and the officer that was alleged to have assaulted the magistrate is not from our unit.

A policeman was reported to have assaulted Magistrate W.A.O. Meigbope of the Isolo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos last Thursday at Isolo and prevented him from entering the court.

The policeman and others were said to have been drafted there to maintain security during the burial of the late Fuji music icon, Barrister Sikiru Ayinde Barrister.

8 Arrested Over Baale’s Murder.
The police in Ogun State have arrested eight persons in connection with the killing of Waidi Mustapha, the Baale of Amuwa Village in Ado Odo-Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State.

The suspects currently being quizzed by the police include Idowu Hopo-Jideme, Afolabi Hopo Samson Abisoye, Joshua D. Kurunyo, Donfosun Kurunyo, Sewanu Vittu, Peter Nutayi and Ade Leke J. Jisu.

According to B. A. Adekunle, the late Waidi Mustapha, who was also a farmer, reportedly had an appointment with one of his customers called Iya Kafaya when he was ambushed and killed.

He said the deceased had reported to his family and kinsmen that some unidentified persons were monitoring his movement and that his life was in danger.

He appealed to the police and the authorities to ensure that justice was done in the matter.
The deceased was survived by two wives and many children.

A/Ibom police vow to arrest gynaecologist's murderers.

Akwa Ibom Police Command has vowed to arrest those behind the alleged murder of Akpan Akpaudo, a Gynaecologist at St. Luke Hospital, Anua in Uyo.

Akpaudo was reportedly killed on New Year’s eve within the hospital premises by yet to be identified gunmen while driving toward the doctors’ quarters.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, Onyeka Orji, said that some politicians had been invited for interrogation in connection with the alleged murder.

The police spokesman, who did not mention the names and number of persons who had been invited for interrogation, said that some aspirants in Mkpat Enin state constituency were among those interrogated.

The current state legislator representing Mkpat Enin, Ekong Sampson and the current local government Chairman, Mfon Nkanteen, are among aspirants vying for the Assembly seat under the PDP platform.

Akpaudo was until his death, a Consultant/Senior Registrar with the State Hospital Management Board in charge of Maternity Unit at St. Luke Hospital, Uyo.

He was also a House of Assembly aspirant for Mkpat Enin state constituency in the 2011 elections.

The murder of Akpaudo came 48 hours to the PDP’s primaries for state House of Assembly aspirants in Akwa Ibom.

The murder of Akpaudo took place a few days after the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Sani Magaji, addressed politicians on the need to hold peaceful elections.

Magaji had earlier warned politicians in the state against carrying firearms and threatened to deal with anybody found liable.

PDP state House of Assembly primaries for some Local Government Areas will be held at the state Police Headquarters in Uyo.

Burning down of INEC office in Ughelli North will not affect election -- Official.

The destruction of the Ughelli North area office of INEC by fire on Monday night will not affect the conduct of the Delta re-run governorship election.

INEC Public Relations Officer in the state,Livy Unigwe said in Asaba on Tuesday that the fire did not destroy any vital material or equip

If they like let them burn down all the INEC offices in Delta, it will not affect our conducting the re-run in any way, we are prepared for the election and Jan. 6 will be a reality, Unigwe said.

Meanwhile, firemen were seen at the premises on Tuesday morning.
