GOVERNOR BABATUNDE FASHOLA

LASEPA Moves To Avert Epidemic In Ikeja.

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, has moved to avert looming epidemic around Oba Akran area of Ikeja, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, following a persistent odour emanating from the site of last week’s collapsed building housing thousands of fishes.

The collapsed building, Haano Industries at 144 Oba Akran collapsed last Thursday. The company operates a cold room and the fishes were not evacuated when the building partially collapsed.

Few days after the collapse, residents in the area have complained of a persistent odour in the area, as they have to cover their noses to avert inhaling the odour.

As a result of the repulsive odour, the management of May and Baker Company Limited petitioned Governor Babatunde Fashola, alerting him of a looming epidemic, while the governor ordered LASEPA management to swing into action to arrest the situation.

Officials of the Lagos State Physical Planning and Urban Development were at the scene of the collapse buildings yesterday to formally seal it off and apply some chemicals to mitigate the impact of the odour.

Also, officials of LASEPA, led by its General Manager, Engr. Rasheed Shabi, visited the scene of the collapse building on Wednesday on the order of the governor and assured that the rotten fishes still in the building would be evacuated by tomorrow.

According to Shabi, “our team is here today after we heard of the smell. The Physical Planning Ministry were also here today to seal up the company. We will evacuate the source of the odour from the buildings latest by Friday.

“We have a law in this state and before you start to build something like this, you have to get an Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA, but this company did not have it. If they had gotten it, the building would not have collapsed.”

Shabi said the state government would still investigate to know the impact of the odour on the area, adding that the owner of the property has already lost the building to the government.

Bosun Odukoya, Logistic Supervisor, May and Baker said he noticed the sharp odour two days after the building collapsed and that the management of the company had to petition the governor on the issue when it became dangerous to health.
