Court grants N1m bail to teenager
A Surulere Magistrates Court in Lagos on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of N1 million to a teenager charged with stealing parts of a printing machine, worth N2.5 million.
Magistrate Ari Nikki-Tobi, who granted bail to 18-year-old Horachius Kalu, also ordered the accused to provide two sureties, one of who must be a community leader.
Kalu, standing trial on a two-count charge of theft and conspiracy, however, pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Constable Ishola Samuel, alleged that the accused stole the items from the company where he was being trained as an apprentice printer.
He told the court that the accused conspired with one person, still at large, to commit the alleged theft in June at No. 33, Imam Dauda St., Surulere.
Samuel said that the accused stole five electronic card panels worth N2.5 million and cartons of Nicholas Fevilate Champagne valued at N54,000 belonging to Daleware Nigeria Ltd.
He submitted that the alleged offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws Lagos State.
Further hearing in the case comes up on Sept. 5.
Meanwhile, a Yaba Magistrates` Court in Lagos on Wednesday granted bail in the sum of N200,000 to a 59-year-old man also charged with stealing printing machine parts worth N2.3 million.
Magistrate M. O. Tanimola granted the bail after the man, Oshobusola Matthew, pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Rita Mommoh, had submitted that the contractor and some others still at large conspired on March 14 to steal the parts at No. 15 Finbarrs St., Akoka in Yaba.
Mommoh said that the accused and the others stole two Impression Levers, worth N200, 000, a WRBI form journal valued at N120,000 and other parts worth two million naira.
The prosecutor, who said that the items belonged to one Mr Sope Bankole, told the court that the alleged crime was committed while they were repairing the printing machine.
The prosecutor said that the alleged offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The case has been adjourned till Sept. 12 for further hearing.
2 men docked for alleged theft of ethanol-laden truck
A driver and his mate were on Wednesday charged before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos with the alleged theft of a truck loaded with a chemical, suspected to be ethanol.
Emmanuel Osunde, 31, and Philip Airuoyuwa, 46 are facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.
The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp. Benedict Unawunwa, put the value of the stolen chemical at N2.7 million, adding that the alleged stolen truck belonged to Nosak Haulage Ltd., Lagos.
He said at the time of the alleged crime, the accused were employees of the haulage company and were asked to convey the substance using one of its trucks.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The Chief Magistrate, Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted the accused bail in the sum of N1 million each, with two sureties in like sum.
She said the sureties must possess valid National Identity Cards and are to provide evidence of tax payment.
She adjourned till Sept. 26 for further hearing.
Man in court for stealing motorcycle valued at N108, 000
The police on Wednesday in Lagos arraigned a 28-year-old man before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a Bajaj Motorcycle valued at N108,000.
The accused, Innocent Ojima was arraigned on a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.
The prosecutor, Insp. Bendedict Unawunwatold the court that the accused stole a Bajaj Motorcycle with Chassis No. MD 2DDDM22-UWB 98485 property of one Mr Morka Happiness.
He said that Ojima and one other suspect still at large, stole the motorcycle on July 14 at about 8 p.m, in front of Ress Hotel, Idowu St., Apapa, Lagos, where it was parked.
He said that the accused committed an offence punishable under Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap C17 Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos 2003.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Oluyemisi Adelaja granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned further hearing till Sept. 26.
65-year-old man in court over alleged N330,000 land fraud
A 65-year-old man was on Wednesday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding two persons of N330, 000.
Marcel Ayogu, who is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing, is said to have obtained the money with the pretext of providing the complainants with two plots of land.
The Prosecutor, ASP Julius Oyakhilome told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 4, 2010, at Obalende, Lagos.
He said that the accused obtained the sum from Emmanuel Ugwuja and Ignatius Ojo on the pretence of procuring the land for them.
Oyakhilome said that the offence contravened Sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Magistrate O.A. Ogunbowale granted him bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till Aug. 25, for further hearing.
