Alleged drugging of politicians: Police say they inhaled vehicle fumes
The Lagos Police Command on Monday said that the preliminary investigation into the alleged drugging of some politicians on Friday revealed that they inhaled fumes from a vehicle exhaust.
The command’s spokesman, Samuel Jinadu, who updated on the matter in Lagos, said that the four unconscious people were revived at an undisclosed hospital.
It will be recalled that some persons were found unconscious in a wagon in Ifako, Lagos, on Friday, causing members of the public to suspect ``ritual kidnapping’’.
Jinadu said a party chieftain and two others who were unaffected by the fumes, were however, detained for questioning and they were also helping the police in their investigation.
He said the car carrying the persons was still in police custody, adding that the public would be updated on the final outcome of the investigation.
86-year-old man docked for unlawful possession of firearm
An 86-year-old man was on Monday at a Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, slammed with a three-count charge of being in unlawful possession of a locally-made pistol.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Benson Emuerhi, told Magistrate Salamah Matepo that the accused, Adelani Abiodun, committed the offence on July 23 at No. 48 Tapa St., Ijesha, Lagos.
He said the accused did not have a valid licence for the weapon.
Emuerhi said the offence contravened Section 428 (d) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Abiodun, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till Oct. 3 for further hearing.
Six docked for alleged theft of items worth N5.3m
Six domestic workers were on Monday arraigned at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a concrete mixer and some household items worth N5.3 million.
The accused are Believe-in-God Ilenda, 30; Jidda Abubakar, 32; Vincent Cinseng, 38; Muyideen Akande, 39; Vincent Iyisu, 21; and Sunday Lawson, 39.
They are standing trial before Magistrate B.A. Sonuga on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen property.
The prosecutor, Insp. Williams Unuane told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 18, at plot 30, Road 215, Banana Island, Ikoyi in Lagos.
He said five of the accused were domestic workers to one Mr Yomi Sonuga, the owner of the stolen items, while Cinseng was the receiver of the stolen property.
Unuane said the items were a concrete mixer worth N1.2 million, a Samsung 60-inches flat television valued at N1.8 million, two Samsung 45-inches television sets worth N1.6 million and a home theatre valued at N750, 000.
According to him, the offence contravenes Sections 390 (9), 427 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
All the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Sonuga granted them bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.
The case was adjourned till Oct.10, for further hearing.
Divorce: Courts tells man first to pay debt owed wife
A Mushin Customary Court in Lagos on Monday said it would not dissolve a marriage until the respondent and his mother fulfill certain conditions.
Tawa Abiodun, 21, had on May 27, filed a divorce suit against her husband, Michael, 22, before the court presided over by Dr Abayomi Ipaye, alleging maltreatment by her husband’s sibling.
``The court will not dissolve the union until the petitioner pays his wife, Tawa, N4,000 the court ordered him to pay for two months’ upkeep allowance of their only child.
The court had on May 27 ordered Michael to be paying Tawa N2,000 monthly for the upkeep of the couple’s eight-month-old baby.
It also ordered the man’s mother to refund the N15,000 she was owing the estranged wife.
The respondent and his mother were absent in court on Monday.
Tawa, had pleaded with the court to dissolve her three-year-old relationship, adding that no dowry was paid on her.
She also prayed the court to grant her the custody of the only child, leading to the order by the court on the husband to start paying for the upkeep of the child.
Ipaye adjourned the case till Aug. 18 to enable the respondent and his mother to meet the order of the court.
2 in court for allegedly beating man to death
Two men were on Monday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly beating a man to death.
The two-- Balogun Adesina (55) and Omokoseparo Oseni (44)-- are facing a two-count charge of murder.
The prosecutor, Insp. Paul Inedu told the court that the accused persons unlawfully killed one Wasiu Adesina during a brawl.
According to the prosecutor, the deceased died following injuries he sustained during the fight.
Inedu said the offence, which was committed on June 7 at Erepeto area of Epe, Lagos State, contravened Section 319 of the Criminal Code C-17 Vol 11, Laws of Lagos State.
The magistrate, Folashade Kayode did not take the plea of the accused and ordered that both of them be remanded in Ikoyi Prisons pending an advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
She adjourned the case to Oct. 28 for further hearing.
3 men arraigned for theft, inflicting injury
Three men were on Monday in Lagos arraigned for alleged theft and using broken bottles to inflict injury on one Mr Laide Akinpelu.
The accused, Alao Azez, 19, Nuru, Sekoni, 29 and Bello Toheeb, 19, are standing trial before a Surulere Magistrates` Court on a four-count charge of conspiracy, assault, inflicting injury and stealing.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Onime Idowu, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offences on July 26, at Chemist Bus Stop, Sari-Iganmu area in Lagos.
He said the accused conspired to commit the alleged offences.
Idowu said that they assaulted the complainant and inflicted injury on his head and left hand.
The prosecutor added that the accused allegedly stole a Nokia cellphone valued N3,500 and N1,700 cash from the complainant.
According to him, the alleged offences contravened Sections 355, 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Magistrate M.K.O. Fadeyi granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N1,000,000 each and to produce two `responsible` sureties.
Fadeyi adjourned the case till Aug. 24 for further hearing.
Estranged husband seeks divorce over wife’s alleged infidelity
People around me always told me about my wife’s immoral movements and waywardness; but I did not believe them because of the lack of proof.

These are the statements of an estranged husband, Alhaji Abdulazeez Afolabi, who on Monday pleaded with a Grade `B’ Customary Court, Oshodi, Lagos, to dissolve his 15-year-old marriage on account of his wife’s alleged infidelity.
Afolabi, 43, told the court that Fatimah had not been able to show the quality of a faithful wife and did not take good care of their children.
The international businessman said in order to keep his wife busy, he asked her to start a business of buying goods from Dubai and selling them in Nigeria.
He said that his wife refused and opted for a classy salon.
He said he opened two well-equipped salons for her at Oshodi and Abule-Egba.
He explained that he decided to seek divorce in court as Fatima had pushed him to the walls and he needed to take another wife.
The Court President, A.I. Olorunumbe, asked the petitioner to tender the photographs in court, but he said he did not come to court with them.
Olorunimbe said since the exhibits were relevant to the case, the petitioner should bring them to court at the adjourned date.
She then adjourned the case till Aug. 10 for continuation.
The couple, who resides at No 1 Subola St., off Eniola Davies, New Oko-Oba, Agege, are blessed with three children, all females.
