Lagos NUJ To Jonathan: Overhaul Nation's Security System.
Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to , as a matter of urgency , completely overhaul the nation's security agencies so as to withstand the enormous security challenges in the country.
The Council gave the advice on the heels of persistent bomb blasts across the nation, which claimed lives of many innocent Nigerians, including journalists.
Describing the killings arising from the incessant bombings as unwarranted, the Council in a statement issued in Ikeja yesterday by its Chairman , 'Deji Gbolahan Elumoye and Secretary , Sylva Okereke wondered why some groups of people could be senseless and callous in killing and maiming fellow Nigerians for unjustifiable reasons, urging the President, who is the Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces to take decisive steps to tackle the growing bomb explosions across the country.
It noted that, if urgent steps are not taken to address the emerging scenario, it may degenerate into an unforeseen social disintegration in the country as ‘there is limit to human endurance’.
According to Lagos NUJ, the security agencies as presently constituted have lost the constitutional and moral rights to deal with security situations in the country, wondering how a suspected bomber could escape from police custody under the watchful eyes of the so-called security officers in the country.
“This shows that nobody is safe in Nigeria, even the security officers are not safe themselves. If they cannot secure a suspect placed under their care, then, there is a serious security lapse, which portend great danger to the country, hence those entrusted with the security of lives and property are no longer capable to handle them, thus there is need for urgent overhaul of all the security operatives in the country else, we Nigerians should find ways of securing ourselves”, the Council noted..
The Council reiterated that, instead of using soldiers to harass innocent Nigerians as is the case in Lagos presently, the military should be used to stem the waves of insecurity of lives and properties in the country.
It therefore wondered why innocent Nigerians, including a Correspondent of Channels Television in Kano state, Mr.Enenche Akogwu , could be shot at and killed by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in the course of his carrying out his official duties during the bomb blasts that rocked Kano city last Friday .
While condoling with the management of Channels Television over the death of its correspondent as well as the families of those, who lost their lives in the serial bomb blasts, the Council called on the management of all the media houses in the country to provide insurance cover for their staff, even as it lauded the insurance programme of the Union under current national leadership of Malam Garba Mohammed .
''With the hazards associated with the journalism profession and the recurring incidents of bomb blasts and explosions in the country , it is high time employers of journalists in the country insured the lives of the practising journnalists in their employ'' , the union added
