PROTESTERS

Soldiers deployment unwarranted, unacceptable.

Human rights lawyer, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite; constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze and former Minister of Finance, Dr. Idika Kalu, have staged a peaceful protest against deployment of military personnel in the streets of Lagos.
Other protesters were Mr. Tunji Abayomi; Mr. TV presenter, Funmi Iyanda; Alhaji Abdulrahman Ahmed and a host of other rights activists.
The protesters, who had earlier converged on Lagos State House of Assembly, headed for Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota after speaking with members of the House of Assembly led by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Musbau Kolawole.
Braithwaite said the deployment of soldiers in Lagos was totally unwarranted and unacceptable.
He demanded that the soldiers should be withdrawn from the streets of Lagos immediately, saying the whole episode was because President Goodluck Jonathan was ill-advised.
Braithwaite stated, “The deployment of soldiers in the streets of Lagos is totally rejected. Although we concede that President Goodluck Jonathan is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the armed forces belong to the people of this country.
“The soldiers are for us. They are to protect and guard the territorial integrity of Nigeria. The nation is not at war; don’t let anybody contrive some kind of dubious confusion in order to use the military against the responsible people of this country.
“We will not accept that. You can see another aspect of this matter: there is no religious and cultural or any form of divide among the people of this country.
It is the opportunistic politicians that are utilising such things so that they can continue the exploitation of the people. So we are saying that the soldiers must be withdrawn from our streets today.
I am sure it is not the intention of President Jonathan but it appears that this man is being ill-advised.
