Security Expert want Federal Government to declare war on Boko Haram.
President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, has called on the Federal Government to formally declare war on Boko Haram and its foreign affiliates to stop further loss of lives.
Ekhomu an internationally renowned security expert decried Friday’s bombings, which claimed about two hundred lives in Kano, saying the government owed its citizens a duty to protect their lives.
He urged the government to fulfill its part of the social contract existing between it and Nigerians by keeping them safe from terrorists.
According to him, Boko Haram has declared guerrilla war on Nigeria, the Federal Government should take steps to stop the violent sect.
He said In this unconventional warfare, Boko Haram has no front lines but the goals are clearly to kill Nigerians, show the Federal Government to be incapable of governance and to take over part of Nigerian territory.
Ekhomu said A formal declaration of war is necessary to enable the Federal Government harness military resources and civilian mobilisation that will result in quick defeat of the enemy and safety of Nigerian lives and territorial integrity.
In his word Under a declaration of war, Boko Haram and its foreign associates can be held and treated as enemy combatants in order to gain useful intelligence and bring the insurgency to a quick and successful conclusion.
Ekhomu urged the government to stop underrating Boko Haram, saying members of the group were not a few misguided youths but an international militia that had sworn to take over Nigerian territory just as the Taliban took over Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan.
He said the Phillipines also had a similar problem with the Abu Sayyaf insurgency, adding that in each of the cases, it took military action to contain the guerrilla threat.
Ekhomu said Boko Haram was not the only problem the country had, also had an amalgamation of Al-Shabbab of Somalia, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb of Algeria, Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula from Yemen and the Talebans from Afghanistan to contend with.
He said the law enforcement and criminal justice models for controlling the Boko Haram insurgency has failed due to poor problem analysis.
The expert said Kano bombings have shown that we are at war, and this should be declared at this time in order to give the government the necessary focus and resources to win.
