Seme customs command collects N2.75b revenue in 6 months
Sadiq Sahabi, Customs Area Controller, Seme Border, said the command generated N2.75 billion as revenue in the first six months of 2011.
Sahabi told newsmen at Seme, near Badagry, that the amount surpassed the revenue generated by the command in the corresponding period of 2010 by N476.95 million.
He said the command would have collected more or doubled the 2010 figure but for the decision to stop the importation of bulk cargo such as sugar, rice, cement and iron rods, through the Seme border.
The controller said that the revenue for 2011 was generated mainly from duties on vehicles, general goods and baggage assessment.
Sahabi said the command was given an annual revenue target of N6 billion with a monthly average of N500 million for year 2011.
He, however, said that the command succeeded in collecting N2.75 billion, 93 per cent of the half year target.
The controller added that the command’s revenue was affected by the low level of activities in January due to the delay in the passage of the budget and the global economic meltdown.
He said the revenue of the command was also affected by public holidays declared by either Nigeria or Benin Republic at different times.
Sahabi further said the general elections in Nigeria and Benin Republic affected the revenue of the command.
