Popular Nollywood producer, Onyeabor, remanded in prison over N8.8m fraud
Popular Nollywood producer, Ifeanyi Onyeabor, was on Tuesday in Lagos remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Prisons over alleged N8.8 million fraud.
Justice Habeeb Abiru of an Ikeja High Court gave the order when Onyeabor was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a seven-count charge of stealing and fraudulent conversion.
Forty-year-old Onyeabor, however, pleaded not guilty.
The movie producer was alleged to have collected the money from Steve-James Nigeria Ltd. in December 2008 for producing two movies Young Amazon and Tribes.
The EFCC claimed that Onyeabor stole and fraudulently converted N1. 85 million, property of Steve-James Nigeria Ltd., entrusted to him for the production of the movies.
It said the accused had at different times received between N1.2 million and N3 million from the complainants.
EFCC prosecutor, Anselem Ozioko alleged that Onyeabor who is the Managing Director of Igo Motion Pictures International after collecting the money failed to produce the movies and diverted the money for other personal uses.
The offences, according to the EFCC, contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Hearing in the bail application has been fixed for July 11.
