Man caught in court allegedly impersonating a lawyer.




A businessman, Tony Benson, who allegedly impersonated a lawyer in court, was on Tuesday charged before an Ilupeju-Oshodi Magistrates’ Court.
Standing trial on a charge of impersonation, Benson, 41, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused had on Jan. 21 at 11.45 a.m. presented himself as a lawyer at Ilupeju-Oshodi Magistrates’ Court to defend two accused persons.
He gave the names of the accused he ``defended in court’’ as Archibong Sunday, 45, and Joy Uzosike, 20, who were facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
He said offence contravened Section 484 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Magistrate M.R Osho-Adebiyi granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in the like sum.
She adjourned the case till July 22 for mention.
Husband arraigned for allegedly assaulting wife
A 49-year-old man, Andrew Amonu, was arraigned on Tuesday for allegedly strangling his wife, Mrs Ngozi Amonu, by the neck and stabbing her with a broken mirror.
Amonu is standing trial at the Ilupeju-Oshodi Magistrates` Court on a three-count charge of breach of the peace, assault and stabbing.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, M.R Osho-Adebiyi, granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the like sum.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde told the court earlier that Amonu assaulted his wife by strangling her on the neck over a disagreement.
Olatunde also alleged that the accused stabbed Ngozi with a broken mirror on the forehead and caused her severe headache and grievous body harm.
He said the accused committed the alleged offence on March 20, at No 1, Arowojobe Close, Oshodi, Lagos.
He submitted that the alleged offence contravened Sections 249 (d), 351 and 335 Cap C17, Vol. II of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.
The case was adjourned till Aug. 5 for further hearing.
Two brothers docked for allegedly defrauding bank of N1.8 million
Two brothers , Blessing Adeniyi and Sunday Adeniyi, were on Tuesday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding Diamond Bank Plc of N1.8 million.
Blessing, 32, and Sunday, 28, both traders at Idumota market are standing trial before Chief Magistrate Mrs Oyindamola Ogala, on a two-count charge of conspiracy to steal and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Innocent Effiong said Blessing collected a loan of N1.8 million from the bank and defaulted in the payment.
He said for non-compliance in the payment, Sunday was arrested at the Idumota shop which led to the arrest of Blessing.
Effiong said the duo committed the offence in August 2008 at the bank’s premises at Nnamdi Azikwe Road, Idumota, Lagos Island.
He said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State and punishable with seven years’ imprisonment on conviction.
The brothers pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Ogala admitted them to bail in the sum of N600, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till Sept. 2 for further hearing.
28 years into marriage, man seeks divorce over incompatibility
A 52-year-old contractor on Tuesday pleaded with a Grade “A” Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his 28-year-old marriage over incompatibility with his wife.
The petitioner, Johnson Agbo-Ola, told the court to dissolve his marriage to Rosaline who, he said, was not submissive to him.
He alleged that Rosaline left their matrimonial home along with their three children 10 years ago and had not shown any willingness to return home.
Responding, Rosaline (49) consented to the dissolution of the union.
She told the court that she packed out because of alleged maltreatment and quarrelsomeness by Johnson.
The Court President, Abayomi Ipaye, adjourned the case till Aug. 2 for further hearing.
He directed that the three children be present at the hearing.
