Customs Service trains its Legal Officers for effective prosecution of cases
The Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Dikko, says the ongoing training of legal officers and legal seat officers of the service is for effective and successful prosecution of cases.
He stated this in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a two-day training programme for legal officers and legal seat officers of the NCS.
Dikko, said one of the six-point agenda of the administration was to maximise the potentials of the service through capacity building.
According to him, the new Department of Human Resource of the NCS has been actively training and re-training officers and men of the service.
Dikko urged participants undergoing the training to contribute to efforts in the fight against corruption.
The NCS Legal Adviser, Umar Mohammed, said the workshop was geared towards improving the skills of legal officers and legal seat officers on the daunting challenges of prosecution.
The Principal Partner Goziem Chambers, Chigozie Eruchalu, said the essence of the workshop was to identify the problems and challenges in the legal profession.
Eruchalu said the training was to equip the legal staff how to apply the law in moving NCS forward.
No plan to stop weekend cargo clearance - Customs
The Apapa and Tin Can Ports Commands of the Nigeria Customs Service said that they had no plans to stop weekend cargo clearance.
The Public Relations Officers of the two commands said through the telephonethat the existing cargo clearance schedule would remain.
Public Relations Officer,Nigeria Customs Service Apapa Area I Command,Timi Bomadi said the Apapa NCS command had not contemplated such a plan.
``Clearance of cargo would continue on weekends as long as the licensed customs agents were ready to come to work,” Bomadi said.
In the same vein, Chris Ogbonna, Assistant Superintendent of Customs, Ports and Terminal Multiservices Ltd Area command, Tin Can Island, corroborated Bomadi's comments.
Some Custom agents and stakeholders said the commands were planning to stop the weekend cargo clearance due to the nonchalant attitude of the licensed custom agents to attend cargo clearance early.
