3 Div Garrison emerges best in combat proficiency competition
The 3 Division Garrison of Nigerian Army has emerged the over all winner of the 2011 Combat Proficiency Competition.
The Garrison polled 440 out of 500 points, beating three other Brigades.
Garrison beat the 33 Armoured Brigade, Bauchi, 21 and 23 Brigades, Maiduguri and Yola respectively.
The 23 Brigade, Yola came second with 400 points while 21 and 33 Brigades scored 340 and 220 points to emerge third and fourth respectively.
The 3 Division Garrison emerged best in Communication skills, map reading and weapon handling.
The 23 Brigade, Yola emerged best in swimming while 21 Brigade, Maidiguri emerged best in obstacle crossing in the week-long competition.
Speaking at the event in Jos, the military Special Task Force (STF) Commander, Maj Gen. Oluwaseun Oshinowo, said combat training was the bedrock of the military.
He said constant training had prepared the military to discharge statutory responsibilities including defending the territorial integrity of the country and tackling internal security challenges.
Oshinowo said training was necessary for commanders to know the strengths and weaknesses of their troops, urging the various commanders to take serious the responsibility of training their subordinates.
He charged the participants to share the benefits of the training with their respective units and challenged them to continuously train if they wanted to succeed in the army profession.
The Commander expressed confidence that the competition would enhance the quality of personnel to meet the desired objectives of the Nigerian Army.
Earlier, the 3 Division Garrison Commander, Brig-Gen. Jatau Alexander, said that the competition featured weapon handling, live shooting, obstacle crossing, combat swimming, map reading and communication skills.
He commended all the competing Brigades for their stamina, saying that the competition was ``a hard-fought and hard-won competition" which each of the Brigades could have won.
