Yuletide Season: LASG Deploys 410 Officers.
In its concerted efforts to ensure safe, stress-free driving, reduce travel time and prevent avoidable loss of lives and property, the Lagos State Government, has deployed 410 specially trained officers to control traffic and assist motorists during the Eid- el Kabir (Ileya), Xmas and New Year festivities.
Commissioner for Transportation,Kayode Opeifa, who said this in his office at Alausa, added that government is aware of the increase in the influx of human and vehicular movement in and out of Lagos at this particular time to either transact business, do festive shopping and celebrate the yuletide season.
He said the anticipated vehicular traffic increase has made the Law Enforcement Agents to improve on their traffic and vehicular management initiatives and restrategise to withstand the challenges.
Opeifa added that 160 officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), 150 men of the Nigeria Police Force attached to LASTMA and 100 other enforcement officers consisting of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) staff have been deployed to control vehicular, human and other traffic related matters that will be associated with Ileya shopping and festivity.
The commissioner said the officers who had undergone series of trainings programmes between July and October 2011 have been deployed to various choke points to facilitate stress free commuting, promote effective and efficient traffic management, assist motorists who are in distress, continuously remove any noticeable impediment, clear bottlenecks and traffic gridlocks on the roadway.
Opeifa said government has also extended the working hours of the officers at some of the difficult areas in the state with the introduction of four shifts especially at construction zones and traffic gridlock spots such as Okokomaiko, Alaba Rago, Mile 12 and Brewery area of Iganmu.
He further stated that in order to reduce the stress and harrowing experience which motorists are subjected to as a result of social events that take place in various event centres in Lagos metropolis, the ministry has concluded arrangement to collaborate with event centres, manage all the events announced in the media and any other event where the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is officially invited.
The commissioner enjoined event planners to text details of their events to 080 7755 1000 for effective traffic management and control.
The commissioner said the ministry is also meeting with religious leaders, market women and transport unions in order to seek their understanding, especially as it affects traffic management around Churches and Mosques.
Opeifa, however, called on motorists in the state and those who will be coming to Lagos either for the first time or to celebrate the festivities, to drive safely, avoid alcohol when driving or expected to be behind the wheel.
He urged them to ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy.
The commissioner also advised motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations and the Law Enforcement Agents who will be on the road to ensure smooth, safe driving and free flow of traffic.
He called on LASTMA, VIOs, KAI Officials and the Nigeria Police men attached to LASTMA to be effective, dedicated, polite and avoid any act that could be termed as harassment of citizens or inimical to their enforcement procedures.
He reminded them of the need to allow the various trainings programmes which they had undergone to reflect in their behavioral pattern and that they should continue to be happy smiling officers and keep lagos traffic moving with dignity, pride and honour.
