Ona Ekhomu

Police Need More Powers to Combat Terrorism.

Federal Government has been advised to grant more powers to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in Nigeria to enable them combat terrorism effectively.
An internationally renowned security expert, Ona Ekhomu Law said enforcement agencies need enough powers to control the terrorist crime.
Ekhomu who is the president of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria said the law enforcement agencies must exercise tight controls on guns, monitor phone conversation, read emails and text messages,, and conduct predictive profiling of terror suspects.
In his paper captioned "Human Rights and National Security: The Challenges of Terrorism and Response of Law Enforcement Agencies in Nigeria", he argued that some freedoms or liberties being enjoyed by Nigerians needed to be curtailed in order to wage an effect war against terror. He said that Nigerians must value order (security) over freedom (liberty) at this time in order for security agencies to disrupt and prevent terrorist acts and stop bombs from going off every day in the country.
Ekhomu, who is also the Africa Representative of the International Foundation for Protection Officers contended that Nigerian law enforcement agencies have not demonstrated a proven track record in preventing terrorist attacks or detecting the perpetrators of the crime.
He said the “feeling of insecurity” is relatively high in Nigeria and the security authorities needed more powers to checkmate terrorists in order to avoid “a regression to the Hobbessian state of nature which is the avowed goal of the Bokites”.
The chartered security expert called for electronic surveillance of terrorists, conduction of warrantees searches, and use of harsh interrogation techniques in order to defeat terrorists.
Ekhomu urged the law enforcement agencies to develop a national terrorism control strategy which will provide a comprehensive road map for combating the scourge of terrorism in the North east, Northwest, South-east and South-south geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Terrirory.
The security expert advised Nigerian security officials “to dectect and arrest terrorist offenders and ensure that they are not threats to Nigerian”.
He urged law enforcers to be proactive and not reactive. He said the reactive strategy gives the initiative to the terrorists. Said he. “Since terrorists use extreme violence, the effect of their attacks are usually disturbing and disgusting”.
Ekhomu said that law enforcement personnel on the terrorism front-lines must be cynical, suspicious and quick-acting in order to survive. “Maintaining caution, aggression, intelligence and cunning are important in ensuring officer survival" he concluded.
