INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE, HAFIZ RINGIM

Security situation in Kogi bothers AIG, summons rulers

The AIG in charge of Zone 8, Uzor Amakulor, has admitted that the security challenge in Kogi had taken a different turn but said the police were up to the task.

Amakulor made the admission in Lokoja shortly after a meeting with traditional rulers from Ebiraland and ordered immediate reorganisation of all vigilance groups in the state.

He said that the move would allow for effective collaboration between the police and the security outfits in the communities.

According to him, the collaboration will cover training of the members of the vigilance groups in new security techniques and handling of light weapons.

He noted that the Police Community Relations Committees in the state had not been effective and said that the committees would be repositioned in due course.

Amakulor said the traditional rulers from Kogi Central Senatorial District were invited based on security reports that some communities in the state were sabotaging efforts being made to rid the state of criminal elements.

He said some of the communities had refused to form vigilance groups and had not been giving useful information to the police.

The AIG explained that he used the opportunity of the meeting to tell the rulers that their senatorial district was gaining bad reputation because of incessant robberies and other crimes.

He, however, expressed delight that the rulers now appreciated the present problem and had agreed to cooperate with the police.

Amakulor blamed weakness at the family level as a major cause of the present security challenge in the state, saying that many parents and guardians had refused to impart moral education in their wards.

While warning communities and parents to do what was expected of them, he said the police would not hesitate to descend heavily on perpetrators of violent crimes and their host communities.

He said the police would soon give an update on the recent robbery attacks in Kabba, Aiyetoro-Gbede and Okene, urging the public to assist the police with useful information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

On the coming Christmas and New Year festivities, the AIG advised the people not to entertain any fears as adequate arrangements had been made to protect lives and property during the period.
