Engineer arraigned for allegedly stealing police van
The police in Lagos on Wednesday charged a fabrication engineer, Abiodun Onimisi, before an Ebute Meta Magistrates Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing an unregistered police vehicle valued N4.5 million.
Onimisi, 38, a graduate of the Federal Technical College, Yaba, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Paul Inedu told the court that the accused was given the sum of N195,000 to fabricate a cabin on the pick-up van on Nov. 9, 2010 at his workshop in Ikeja.
Inedu said the the accused later claimed to have driven the van to Sango-Otta in neighbouring Ogun State the same day, but was robbed of the vehicle and the cash sum of N195,000 at gun point.
Onimisi claimed that he was attacked by armed robbers when taking the vehicle to Ogun State and both the vehicle and N195, 000 was snatched from him at gun point.
The prosecutor said that the accused was not saying the truth about what happened to the van and money.
He added that the offence contravened Sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Onimisi, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Folashade Kayode , the Magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing till March 2.

Absence of registrar stalls trial of YWCA scribe for alleged forgery
The absence of the court registrar on Wednesday stalled the trial of the Secretary General, Young Women Christian Association of Nigeria, Sussie Metu at the Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos.
Metu is standing trial on a two-count charge of forgery and impersonation.
The accused is charged for allegedly forging vouchers worth N144,000 to falsely get money from her employers sometimes in Aug. 2008.
The accused was arraigned on Feb. 2, 2011, she pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety.
The Prosecutor, SP Chris Ohai said the offence contravened Sections 463 and 467, of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
At the resumed hearing of the case, O. Momodu, the Magistrate, told parties that the matter could not go on because of the absence the registrar was ill and could not make it to work.
Momodu adjourned the case till March 31 for further hearing.

Landlord, security guard reminded in prison over alleged murder.
An Ebute Meta Magistrates Court, Lagos, on Wednesday ordered a 68-year-old landlord and a security man remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons over the shooting to death of an alleged armed robbery suspect.
The Magistrate, J. Ugbomoiko, ordered the landlord, Lekan Adigun, and Dele Alayande, 28, remanded for allegedly shooting to death Chidi Okoye, 25, at Iju-Ishaga-- a Lagos suburb.
The court did not take the pleas of the suspects and ordered that they should remain in custody pending the advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ishaku Babaji told the court that though Adigun owned a double-barrel gun, its license expired six years ago.
Babaji said Adigun gave the gun to Alayande, a security man, to assist him in his security work on their street at Iju-Ishaga.
He said Adigun claimed that robbers had been disturbing the neigbhourhood and on Nov. 6, 2010, the day of the incident, some men were seen walking into the street at midnight.
The Prosecutor said Alayande also unlawfully had in his possession one expended cartridge without a valid license from the Inspector General of Police.
Babaji said the offence contravened Sections 319 (1) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State and was punishable with a death on conviction.
The Magistrate adjourned the case till March 4, for further hearing.

Shakara Robber Tells Court: ‘I Rob With Toy Gun’
A 23-year old man has confessed that he carved an object that resembled a gun which he uses to rob people in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.
Kolawole Showale confessed at Ejigbo magistrate’s court presided over by Mrs. S.O. Solebo that he attempted to use the object found on him to rob before he was arrested by the police.
He also confessed that whenever he sets out to rob people, he wears military uniform to disguise as a military officer.
Kolawole, who claimed that he was a contractor and resides at Suraju Street, Okerube Ikotun on the outskirts of Lagos, said that he lived with his mom but she does not know where he was presently.
The defendant was arrested by the police at Jakande Estate, Bus Stop, Oke Afa, Isolo when he used a the carved object that looked like gun to rob Tovid Oluwasegun.
His attempt to rob Oluwasegun was foiled when the victim raised an alarm. When Kolawole attempted to escape, he was arrested by the people around and handed over to the police who took him to their station.
At the station, he claimed that he was a building contractor before he discovered the trick of robbing people with a toy gun.
He was eventually charged to court where he pleaded guilty and confessed that he was actually a robber.
While presenting facts of the matter, the prosecutor, Kunle Shonibare, told the court that the defendant tried to rob his victim with an object that looked like a gun but luck ran out on him when the victim raised alarm and he was arrested.
Shonibare told the court that the defendant, who may not have a record of previous offence might have used the object to rob many people and urged that he should be sentenced as the offence he committed was contrary to section 403 and 509 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 2 laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2004.
The court found him guilty as charged and ordered that he should be remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa, pending when the court will sentence him in the next adjourned date, 7 March, 2011.

2 security guards docked for stealing N5m
For allegedly stealing N5 million from their boss, two security men were on Wednesday docked at an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos.
The accused, Iyegbu Sylvester, 40, Aborisade Dipo, 43, are standing trial before Mrs O. I. Oguntade, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Stanley Iwok, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 29, 2010 at PCI Engineering Close, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Iwok alleged that the accused, who were security men at Mr Tunde Durojaiye’s residence, stole the N5 million meant for the payment of the salaries of the latter’s employees.
According to Iwok, the offence contravened Sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.
The two accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate granted the two accused N250,000 bail each with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 9 for mention.

Threat lands driver in trouble
A driver, Ahmed Akorede, who allegedly threatened his former employer, Jonathan Otie, over unpaid salaries was on Wednesday charged to court in Lagos.
Akorede, 25, is facing a count charge of conducting himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace before A. Tobi of a Surulere Magistrates Court.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Raji Hakeem, told the court that Akorede on Feb. 12, at No 16, Efutide St., Aguda, Surulere, threatened to kill Otie and his family.
The prosecutor said the accused claimed that he was not paid for two months (about N40,000) out of the six months he worked for Otie’s wife in 2009.
According to the prosecutor, Akorede’s employer claimed that the accused was paid off, but he started calling and threatening to shoot him and kidnap his daughter unless he is paid N80 million.
He said the offence contravened Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Akorede pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N10,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate adjourned the case till Feb. 22 for further hearing.

Undergraduate docked for burglary
A 23-year-old undergraduate was on Wednesday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court over alleged burglary of a warehouse.
The accused, Temitope Okanlawon, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing cash and valuables, totaling N980,000.
The prosecutor, Sgt Nwosu George, said the accused broke into the warehouse belonging to one Mr Ismaila Oginni and stole N280,000 cash and jewelry valued at N700,000.
George said the accused was arrested in his bid to sell the jewelry, adding that the prospective buyers took to their heels on sighting the police.
He said the offence contravened sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate, Mulikat Ali-Balogun, granted the accused N200,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case till March 3 for further hearing.

Man docked for allegedly stealing $6,000 from a business man.
A 40-year-old man, Estimate Eze was on Wednesday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly stealing 6,000 U.S. dollars (about N900,000) from a businessman.
Eze is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining under pretence and stealing before Mrs A.O. Gbajumo of the Surulere Magistrate Court.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Raji Hakeem told the court that the accused sometime in 2008 at Orile Iganmu conspired with others now at large to steal 6,000 dollars belonging to one Mr Corlineus Okorie.
He said the offence contravened Sections 390, 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
Gbajumo adjourned the case till March 7, for mention.

Driver docked over theft of company property
A former driver with Vitafoam Nigeria Ltd., Nojeem Faniyi, was on Wednesday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly stealing the company’s property, valued at N11.9 million.
Faniyi, 44, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy before Chief Magistrate, Mrs I.O. Akinkugbe, of the Igbosere Magistrates Court in Lagos.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Stephen Molo, said the accused, who worked at the Ikeja branch of the firm, with others at large, were to deliver 160 drums of chemicals and three laptops in a Hilux bus to the company.
Molo told the court that Faniyi and the others stole the items, including the Hilux bus, all valued at N11.9 million.
He said the accused committed the offence sometime in January.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9) and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Akinkugbe admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N2 million and adjourned the case till March 10 and March 17 for trial.
