Fashola promises violence-free political campaigns
Ahead of the April general elections, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola has assured residents of the state of a crime and violent- free electioneering campaign.
The governor stated this while inaugurating 100 security operational vehicles and 50 patrol motorcycles equipped with various security gadgets which he handed to the management of Lagos State Security Trust Fund,at the State House, Alausa, Ikeja.
The 150 vehicles and motorcycles will complement the existing fleet of 184 vehicles, making 330 vehicles already donated to the state security outfit- the Rapid Response Squad, RRS.
Fashola said: “This first batch of vehicles and motorbikes is an evidence of our capacity to outrun and apprehend anybody who wants to commit crime using a motorcycle in Lagos. I want to assure that if you choose to commit crime, you will be caught. You will be apprehended.
This is why Lagosians are now looking forward to the commencement of electioneering campaign, a campaign that will be a carnival of ideas and superiority of programmes. That is the kind of campaign we will have in Lagos State and that is the kind of campaign that the police and other security agencies in the state will provide rather than a campaign of guns and machetes.
He commended the Police and other security agencies in the state for their “total commitment” to the security of life and property in the state adding that the price for security is eternal vigilance from all and sundry.
Fashola also commended the Board of Trustees of the State Security Trust Fund saying the Fund is not only the backbone of security in the State but has become a model which is being emulated not only nationally but also internationally.
He urged Lagos residents to be vigilant at all times even.He urged the police not to use the vehicles to brutalised, terrorise innocent citizens whose taxes are being used to purchase the security items.
The governor said at least 600 distress calls are received by RRS on a daily basis and implored Lagos residents to make use of the 767 and 112 toll free emergency numbers to give useful information to the police.
Commissioner of Police Marvel Akpoyibo described the donation as unusual, saying the command has never had 50 brand new motorcycles at once. He promised to utilise the vehicles effectively.
