Ketu Riot: 32 Okada Riders Charged32
The police in Lagos yesterday arraigned 32 suspects before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogudu in connection with the fracas between the commercial motorcyclists and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA.
An okada rider was reportedly crushed to death in Ketu, Lagos on Wednesday while he was trying to evade arrest by LASTMA officials.
In a violent reaction, okada riders attacked LASTMA officials and burnt two Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, buses belonging to the Lagos State government.
Those docked yesterday include: Idris Alaba Bello, Alhaji Mamida, Isiaku Mohammed, Joseph Elejere, Monsuru Amusan, Eyoh Odoh, Blessing Oyetu, Damilare Ademola, Ojo Lawal, John Emmanuel, Abiola Olukoba, Babangida Garba, Trimisu Garba, Olayiwola Olatunde, Kazeem Adesina and Lateef Hassan.
Others are: Ibrahim Kazeem, Gbemileke Okunlola, Kabiru Bello, Muhammed Abdul, Sumalla Sufianu, Afam Nwoyo, Olatunde Olawunmi, Oladimeji Adeola, Adindu Dik, Mohammed Baba, Owolewe Leye, Oyeyola Olalekan, Usman Ibrahim, Ayomide Falana, and Musifiu Asifatu.
The police prosecutor, ASP Eyo Owai in a three count charge alleged that the suspects conspired to commit felony and during the riot of 9 February, 2011 at Ketu in Lagos they maliciously damaged two buses valued at N40 million, property of Lagos State government.
The police said the offences are punishable under Sections 516, 71 and 51(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap. C17, Vol.II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
When the charges were read to them, they pleaded not guilty.
Counsel to the accuse persons applied for their bail on liberal grounds.
The trial magistrate, Y. O. Aje Afunwa admitted each of the 32 suspects to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in the like sum.
The case has been adjourned till 2, March, 2011 for mention.
