Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Yakubu Alkali, has ordered the removal of all illegal structures around the command’s headquarters.
Command’s spokesman Samuel Jinadu said the measure was for security reasons following the spate of explosions in some parts of Nigeria.
Jinadu said the removal of the illegal structures becomes necessary in view of security happenings in different parts of the country, including bomb explosions.
He explained that the commissioner gave the directive after inspecting facilities within and around the command’s headquarters and realised that the structures posed a security risk.
Jinadu said apart from the removal of the structures, vehicles going into the premises of the command, including those owned by police personnel, would be thoroughly checked.
He also said vehicles, including those of policemen, would no longer be allowed to be parked inside the premises.
The Police Boss urged members of the public visiting the command headquarters to comply with the new directive as the measure was for the safety of all..

Cleric in court for allegedly defrauding student of N250,000.
A 32-year-old cleric, Okey Madu, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing before Kemi Doja-Ojo of an Ebute Meta Magistrates Court, Lagos.
Madu is alleged to have collected N250,000 from Uche Eke, a student, as a loan to clear about N300 million purportedly in Fidelity Bank, for the building of his church.
The prosecutor, Insp. Moses Uademevbo, told the court that Madu unlawfully obtained N250,000 from Eke with a promise to refund the money.
He said the accused promised the complainant that he would refund the N250,000 after clearing the two million dollars in the bank.
The prosecutor said the incident occurred on May 16, 2010 at 103, Awolowo Road, Railway Compound, Ebute Meta, Lagos.
He said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9), 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, punishable with seven years imprisonment on conviction.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000, with one surety in like sum.
The magistrate adjourned further hearing in the case till March 21.

Protest over the killing of a motorcyclist by LASTMA operatives.
Commercial motorcyclists on Wednesday embarked on a protest in Mile 12 area of Lagos following the alleged killing of a colleague by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority. Eyewitnesses said the rider ran across the path of a moving vehicle in a bid to escape arrest by some LASTMA officials.
An eyewitness said the deceased attempted avoiding arrest for allegedly contravening the law prohibiting him from plying the Ikorodu Expressway.
Another eyewitness, however, said the LASTMA operatives had allegedly wanted to extort money from the motorcyclist and in the process of trying to force him to stop, he lost control and had the fatal accident.
Angered by the action of the LASTMA operatives and the subsequent death of their colleague, other riders barricaded the Ikorodu Expressway, thereby causing a traffic gridlock.
Two buses, a LAGBUS’ with Reg. No. XR 143 AKB and one belonging to the Bus Rapid Transport were set ablaze by the protesters.
The prompt response of men of the Lagos State Fire Service, however, prevented the buses from being completely razed.

According to the official, the LASTMA officials were doing their duty of enforcing the state government law that prohibits commercial motorcyclists from plying Ikorodu road.
He said the death of the rider was due to his effort to evade arrest.
The anti-riot policemen and official of the Nigeria Civil and Security Defense Corps have been deployed to the area to maintain peace and order.

Ex-employee, 2 others charged with stealing railway property.
A former employee of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and two others were on Monday arraigned before the Ebute Meta Magistrates Court, Lagos, charged with burglary and theft of the corporation’s property, valued at N1.5 million.
The accused, Lucky Okiki, 45, Michael Adebayo, 25 and Basil Ifechelobi, 34, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Moses Uademevbo, told the court that Okiki on Jan. 20 broke into the NRC store and removed nine inter-pole coils and their connectors cables, valued at N1.5 million.
He said Okiki gave the stolen items to Adebayo who took them to Ifechelobi for sale at Owode Market.
The prosecutor said ifechelobi knew that the NRC property was stolen.
He said the offence contravened Sections 390, 411 (2) and 427 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, M.O. Olubi, granted each of the accused N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till March 7, for further hearing.

A 26-year-old man was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates Court for alleged reckless driving which resulted in the death of a pedestrian.
The accused, Yemi Bakare, is facing a two-count charge of dangerous driving and manslaughter.
The prosecutor, Insp. Eranus Nnamonu, said that the accused dangerously drove a Nissan Sunny saloon car, with registration number DE 312 SMK, killing an unidentified pedestrian in the process.
The prosecutor said the accused committed offences punishable under Sections 28 (D) and 18, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
He noted that the alleged offences were committed on Jan. 24 under the Ikeja overhead bridge.
The Magistrate, A. O. Komolafe, granted the accused N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till Jan. 15 for further hearing.

Court adjourns trial of estate agent
A Surulere Magistrates Court on Wednesday adjourned till March 23 the continuation of the trial of an estate agent who allegedly obtained N225,000 under pretence from a client, Dr Mark Nwogu.
The accused, Charles Ejiogu, 43, was first arraigned before Magistrate M.K.O. Fadeyi on Dec. 15, 2009 for allegedly obtaining the sum under the pretence of providing Nwogu accommodation.
The accused was granted bail in the sum of N100,000, having pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of obtaining money under pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Idowu Onime, told the court that the accused deceived Nwogu when he asked him to issue a cheque for N225,000 as part payment for the rent.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 390 (9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
At the continuation of trial on Wednesday, a witness, Vitus Mbabie, said he had asked the accused to look for a tenant to occupy a flat at No 45, Olufemi Road.
He told the court that the tenant came back to him later to request for a third receipt of N200,000 for which he knew nothing about.
He said he asked the complainant what the money was paid for and he told him that the accused said the money was for the landlord’s family.

A 35-year-old man, who claimed to be a travel agent, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates Court for duping a man of N2.2 million to procure a U.S. visa.
The accused, Michael Ososunya, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Eranus Nnamonu, told the court that Ososunya and one Yinka, now at large, conspired and unlawfully obtained N2.2 million from one Adekunle Ojo, to acquire a passport and procure a U.S. Visa for him.
The prosecutor said the accused also promised to provide accommodation for Ojo while in the U.S, knowing fully that his representations were false.
He said after collecting the money, the accused neither procured the passport nor the visa.
The prosecutor said the accused committed offences punishable under Sections 390 (9), 419 and 516, of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.
He said the alleged offences were committed on Aug. 2010 at Jibowu area of Lagos.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police Arrest Masquerades
The police in Lagos State, have arrested two masquerades for allegedly stealing at Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos.
They were arrested and taken to Ijesha Police Station where their masks were removed and it was discovered that it was 24-year old Solomon Okon and Sunday Effiong, 20, that hid behind the masks to rob people of their valuables.
The suspects wore masks armed with cutlasses and started harassing, beating and dispossessing people of their valuables in the area.
Among those they allegedly robbed are Emma Udoh, whom they assaulted and Glory Thompson whom they dispossessed of her purse containing N26,000 and other valuables.
They also raided some shops in the area and stole some valuables.
The residents decided to invite the police after several complaints that the suspects were disguising as masquerades to rob people.
The police were contacted and the suspects were arrested and taken to the station.
At the station they reportedly made a confessional statement that they used the masks to rob.
They were charged to Cele Magistrate’s Court with felony to wit stealing.
The offence is contrary to Section 517, 390 and 417 of the Criminal Code, Cap.38 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2004.
Okon and Effiong pleaded not guilty to the charge. The magistrate, C. T. Adesola granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties.
They were remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri Prisons, Apapa, Lagos pending when they will meet the bail conditions.
The matter has been adjourned.

Police re-assures of security at Super Eagles, Leone Stars match.
The police in Lagos have re-assured residents of adequate security as fans began early in the morning to mill around the Teslim Balogun Stadium for the friendly match between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
The crowd is expected for the international friendly encounter between the Super Eagles and Leone Stars of Sierra Leone but we hope they will control themselves, the chief security officer for the game, ACP Gideon Akinsola said.
That is why the police force has deployed quite a good number of its officers and men for security in case of crowd restiveness.
He added that the police were also working with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials to control traffic.
The Vice-Chairman, Lagos State Football Association, Tade Azeez, said the 2,000 had been deployed for security.
He explained that the police anti-bomb unit was also deployed to the stadium because there was a need for security around the venue 24 hours before the kick-off.
Fans began to arrive in the venue of the match, which kicks off at 7 p.m., as early as 10 a.m.
The Super Eagles played their last match in Lagos on April 30, 2004 in the LG Cup Tournament against the Teranga Lions of Senegal and lost 0-1 at the National Stadium.
On the match, former Green Eagles goalkeeper and one-time assistant coach of the Super Eagles, Joe Erico, said it that was nice to have the Eagles play in Lagos again.
